General Comments

I have had an HP Deskjet 1220C for a bit less than a year. For the first 3-4 months I loved it. It will now print only on light weight paper, forget heavy photo paper, the rear manual feed never worked. It has now begun clattering and groaning with death sounds. It has not had heavy usage at all -- even when it worked. This was a $400 machine and I expected much more than I got. I now have an Epson 1280 which is great albeit not as fast.

This a very slow machine, however; it produces great looking prints, I also had the problem of it refusing to accept heavy inlkjet paper and eventually I just let it sit there. Three years later I haven't found anything that matches its print quality without having multiple ink cartridges, I just found a used machine for $150 and I'm looking forward to using it for my digital imaging. I really dont care if it takes 20 minutes to spit out a 13"x19" print, I'm not cranking a handle, I just go away and then when it's done I have a beautiful print.

My HP Deskjet 1220C is the PS version, and although it can be rather slow with extremely large photographic prints - the wait is well worth it. Prints are crisp, clean and clear, with no banding.

When using the printer with Windows 98SE, I found it was quicker to alter the settings to "print directly to the printer" rather than spooling via the computer for larger prints.

My printer is still in use after three and a half years, and I would be very reluctant to part with it. Regarding ink usage, I have found it far more economical than the Epson equivalent - especially when using decent paper. The secret of ink conservation, I find, is in the quality of the paper.
