General Comments

Caffe Uno - Notting Hill Gate

One of the worst eating out experiences I've had for years.

The service was absolutely chaotic - not really the fault of the staff who seem to have had no training at all. We complained to the manager but he was totally ineffectual - didn't apologise and never came back to see if we were all right. We kept having to ask for forks or knives or napkins - and ended up finally fetching our own wine because it took so long in coming. After we'd reminded the waitress for the third time that a mixed leaf salad hadn't arrived, she rushed up the stairs and slammed down a bowl of some very tired lettuce - presumably they thought we wouldn't notice the difference. The food was decidedly third-rate (even the garlic bread) and overpriced. The 'dishes of the day' on a blackboard, far from being made from the day's produce, proved to have been painted on as a permanent fixture!

No help, no concern about customers, no apologies. What an awful place! The only redeeming features were the wine which wasn't bad, and a helpful barman who had to be recruited as a waiter at one point.

A blot on the London restaurant scene - it made me thoroughly ashamed as I'd invited a friend from overseas there.

Makes you think that if these restaurant CHAINS actually paid even a little bit of attention to some staff training, basic courtesy from the staff to all customers and some efficiency and manners, any food which isn't up to standard may just be forgotten and overseen by wondeful staff - clearly, from my own experience Cafe Uno are seriously lacking in most areas. Maybe they should give up their leases for some serious restaurants who are interested in their clients, repeat customers and not just money money money.

I couldn't agree more. I felt just as angry at the way the confused but well-intentioned staff were treated by Caffe Uno - left to fend for themselves with a minimum of training and support - as I did about the lack of concern for the customers in terms of service and quality. Everybody seemed to get a bad deal at this restaurant - except the owners of the chain and their profit margins.

Went to this chain in Shrewsbury recently for the first time - slightly disappointed in the quality of the midweek special meals - but overall not too bad. The ciabatta was really good. However the real difference from other reviews was the staff - they really knew what they were doing and were attentive and polite. Drinks were really good and the interior praised by my teenage son. My only real criticism would be that there were as many staff as customers at 12 midday in the week. Working in a hotel myself with absolute minimum staff I was amazed.
