Easy Worming for Cats - they like the taste.
None that I know of
Panacur Favourites for Cats
Worming cats is NOT the easiest of jobs - especially if you have LARGE cats. In recent years I have chosen to take the easier option and use granules which are mixed with the food however this can cause a few problems when, like me, you have multiple cats as one may ignore the food and another may help himself to several portions.
When I noticed that there was a new option on the market I was naturally very interested especially as it was Panacur which I have been favouring for years anyway. In fact, they are called Panacur Favourites for Cats and, having had very good results from using Favourites for Dogs, I was anxious to treat the cats the same way.
Each pack contains two tablets - each being about an inch long by about half an inch across. These are marked so that they can be easily broken for accurate dosage which is half a tablet for each 2.5 kilos of bodyweight. This can be added to feed or given after feeding. Each tablet contains 500mg Fenbendazole Ph.Eur and they are for the treatment and prevention of gastro intestinal nematodes such as Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma spp.
The tablets are 'bubble' wrapped and the foil backing has to be peeled away rather than split - as I found after failing to get into it the first time. Once in - which is easy when tackled the right way - the tablets, which are brown in colour, are very easily removed. They are quite soft which is useful as they need to be broken for dosage. They would also be easy to crumble should you need to add them to food. They smell very similar to a stock cube - I decided that I would draw the line at tasting this time! Apparently they are supposed to be fish flavoured.
My largest cat, Casey, is also the most difficult to treat. He weighs seven and a half kilos and is NOT fat. He is a BIG cat - and it's mostly muscle. Consequently he is very strong. He also does tend to object to being picked up or restrained. Luckily he is a big softie so there is no attempt at scratching or biting - but he is extremely difficult to hold let alone dose with pills or potions. Weighing as much as he does, his dose is three halves of tablets - each about half an inch square. How would he react? Simple - I handed them to him and he ate them - and looked for more! No problem at all. I think I should qualify that statement - there is one problem - having six cats I have to dose them all separately otherwise, as they consider Favourites to be treats, they try to outdo each other on who can get most.
Panacur Favourites are not available from supermarkets but only from specialist outlets, vets, etc. I bought mine on-line from Vetmedic Online Pharmacy for Animals (http://www.vet-medic.com) and they cost £3.82 for a box of two tablets. Five pence from the sale of each pack is donated to each of Paignton Zoo and the Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB).
Would I recommend this product? Yes, definitely - it's a far less traumatic procedure than the usual form of worming cats - for both animal and owner. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it was a most enjoyable experience for both.
I hope that this will be of help to you - and I thank you for reading.
