Good Points

Comfy drive,
Quick and responsive,
Economical,
5 star euro NCAP rating

Bad Points

Boot could be bigger

IT COSTS £50 TO REPLACE A HEADLIGHT BULB DUE TO POOR DESIGN THIS MUST BE DONE AT A GARAGE!!!

After sales service - what after sales service!

General Comments

The Renault Megane 1.9 Dci family car is overall a good design, and is a comftable car. It gives good fuel efficiency and the 1.9 Dci engine is as fast and responsive as the 2.0l petrol.

With a 5 star euro ncap rating the car is one of the safest in it's class, which is reassuring.

My only criticisms is the relatively high cost of renault servicing, and the ridiculous situation with the headlight bulbs.

Basically, to change the bulb, you have to remove the bumper, then remove the headlight to insert a new bulb. Renault charge £15 for a £1 trade price bulb!, and then charge £35 for the HALF HOUR! it takes for an experienced renault mechanic to complete the job. The Megane is very much set up to stop you carrying simple maintainace jobs yourself - it's difficult to do much under the bonnet as everything is sealed away.

Renault obviously have identified this as a nice little earner!

A great car, but take it to a private garage, not renault.

Respect given for moominpapa's review.

Hi, would just like to comment that to change a bulb you do NOT have to take the bumper off or remove the headlamp, there are inspection covers in the wheelarch housing which you remove to access the bulb/s, also you can (just get your hand in to change the main bulbs if your lucky. One last point is bulbs don't cost £15...£11 for H7 dip beam, £8 for H1 main beam and about £2.50 for an amber indicator bulb.

Ricardo, thank you for your comments.....
However, RENAULT (the folk who built the car...) STATE that the bumper must be removed to facilitate removal and change of the bulb on the nearside, therefore if you work for Renault and this is untrue please advise both Croydon and Watford dealerships of this being false! RENAULT QUOTED the charges I mentioned, I refer to my previous request should you be a Renault employee. If however you are not such an employee, for your information the following facts: The price of such parts is, of course, variable from supplier to supplier, however the trade price remains approx £1 for a H7 bulb assuming a significantly large enough bulk order, (it is reasonable to surmise Renualt would fall into such a category, for instance this is the price Ambulance service workshops purchase them for)
A fitter (mechanic) with 26 years experience failed to change the near-side bulb in the above vehicle after spending 75 minutes trying. A second fitter with slightly less experience, at 11 years, gave up after only half an hour.
Obviously Renault could shove their inflated prices, so I took my car to local garage and the bulb was changed in 25 minutes of gymnastic activity, via the small access apertures. Most importantly however, this particular fitter, had a Megane himself, and had had his own car apart to change the bulb the first time his went, so had had the opportunity to visualise previously what he had to do, as I'm sure you appreciate, you certainly can't see what you're doing through the side of the car!
As I say, if you work for Renault, take action on the problem, if not, you are I'm afraid misguided!
    Many thanks for your interest

I agree with moominpapa's review, great car but what a shame about the light bulbs! I tryed myself, and the bruises have only just gone down!
Renault charged me £58 to change it AND scratched the bumper when they took it off!!
If the other reviewer is such a golden boy at changing them , he's welcome to come and sort mine anytime!!!!!

Only a baby octopus can change front indicator bulb through the wheel arch liner. Quicker to remove wheel arch liners, then bumper, then lamp assembly. A - purchase indicator bulb PLUS six fasteners to hold front bumper top to body. B - support front securely on axle stands so as to allow front wheels to turn from lock to lock. C - A flat bicyle spanner is ideal for prising off the wheel arch liner fasteners. These can be reused. D - fasteners to hold front bumper top to body will shatter when removed. Wear goggles. D - On reassembly, headlamps are likely to remain in alignment, and do not need re-adjusting.
