General Comments

Beeman P3 - I wanted to buy an air pistol that had the feel, heft, and quality of a firearm. After careful review, primarily from the good folks on this site, I decided on the Beeman P3, also known as the HW40.

Lifting the gun out of the box for the first time brought a smile to my face. Oh yes, heft, feel, balance, and a style into which European fire arms seemed to have morphed is represented in the P3. It's synthetic material composition is common in today's modern firearms and insures the gun's appearance will last with a minimum of fuss.

Releasing the "hammer" on the pistol actually allows the gun's barrel to be lifted and swung forward nearly 180 degrees. In this one action the gun is cocked and automatically safitied simultaneously.

Loading the .177 cal. pellet takes a little practice due to the confining space but is easily done by feel alone after practice.

The barrel is then returned into its locked position. This requires practice since the compression sequence is being done and there is the compression's resistance. The barrel latches down and remains locked but not unlike an alligator it could bite (pinch big time) if you aren't careful; don't ask me how I know!

The trigger is match quality. Without a doubt I have never used a trigger on any firearm that's this smooth. Adjustment can be made but I seriously doubt that a shooter will have to change the factory setting.

Accuracy is outstanding. Since the gun uses compressed air there isn't any spring recoil to effect accuracy and the funtioning compensator reduces the barrel's "flip up when fired"

I've shot about 2000 pellets during the 3 weeks that I've owned the P3. Gammo Match gives the best grouping at 10 Meters but Beeman's wadcutter and Crossman's Copperhead wadcutters, both sold at Walmart, gave solid performances as well. So its easy to find pellets that reward you when shooting this fine gun.

Not a chance of buyer's remorse here. I bought the gun on line from D&R Sports Center for about $137 US. Forgive the pun, but I believe this gun gives the owner the best bang for the buck! I only wish I had bought the P3 sooner.

Respect given for smashingpunkin's review.

After 3000+ plus pellets were run through the gun, the main seal failed and the gun had to be returned to Beeman for warranty repair. I hope this is not common!

Hi, After you got it fixed, did the gun seal still break after a few thousand shots?

The gun's seal is working fine, however I will replace it myself next time. Here is a link that will show you how easy it is:

Well my P3 has failed again. After having the seal replaced by Beeman, I hardly put two tins of pellets through the gun when another problem arose.

After loading a pellet into the barrel and while compressing the barrel into the lock and firing position, the gun will discharge the compressed air before the barrel is completely latch in the firing position.

At least by discharging prior to the latched position, the pellet wasn't fired!

By design, the safety automatically engages as soon as the barrel is raised out of its locked position when air charging. I confirmed that the safety is still engaged after the gun discharged on its own.

I'll send it back again to Beeman for repair under warranty which will probably take three weeks for the return.

I'm disappointed with the P3's reliability. I would seriously reconsider not buying this gun if I knew then what I know now. Reliability is paramount in any gun, regardless if its air or powder charged.

If I were to rate the gun again based on my experience I would give it a 5 out of 10. Did I get a lemon or has anyone else experienced the same?

Its a shame because its such a sweet gun to shoot with excellent 10 meter accuracy. I'll give an update when Beeman returns the gun.

Interesting ! I have a very reliable Weihrauch HW 40 PCA. It has had a couple of drops of silicone oil through the hole on the underside of the cylinder. Recently a clone pistol boxed as a BEEman has come on to the market here in the UK. It looks, and feels exactly like a Weihrauch but has Beeman ( i once thought it a respected name in US guns - maybe a different Beeman ?) on the side moulding. After 25 shots power went right down .It now has a range of about 3 yards before the pellet drops.

Hi, i have just bought a Beeman 2004e arrived today. my initial thought is as most of you say, a nice gun but quite difficult to load. i also noticed that the rear sight feels very loose, i can move it freely about 2 to 5 mm side to side with my fingers, it rattles if i shake the gun, so i am not too sure about the acuracy yet, should this be like this? also has anyone tried to fire darts from this gun? if so how was it? i will update this after a few hundred shots, but info on the darts would be nice.

Darts will ruin that finely rifled barrel. Please stick with high end .177's.....
