Good Points

Good looking.
Pull-up sun blinds on rear doors and all sunroofs.
Local Renault dealer is fantastic.

Bad Points

Many mechanical faults over 4 years.

General Comments

We have 4 children and a large dog, and as we didnt want a sliding rear door we didnt have much choice when looking for a people carrier in 2001.

In the end we bought the Renault Grand Espace 2.2 DCi Priviledge People Carrier, we paid extra to have the manual front sunroof converted to electric. In hindsight this was a waste of money, as air conditioning is much quieter and more efficient.

I think this version of the Espace is good looking (despite the comparision with the A-Team van!).

The performance is very good for such a huge diesel car.

The seats although very heavy and cumbersome, are easily removed. The front seats can also be turned round to face the passengers, which is very handy when picnicing in the rain!

The down side is that we have had many mechanical faults. Our local Renault dealership have been exceptionally helpful though.

The EGR valve has been replaced twice (c. £200 inc. fitting), the front arm rest pivots have both needed replacing, the exhaust system is failing already, an electrical error was corrected by removing a plug and welding the two wires together, central locking on one rear door has failed twice, the tailgate freezes shut in very cold weather and both rear sunroofs have leaked.

In conclusion, this really is a very good car. If you are thinking of buying one of these slightly older versions of the Espace, I hope you have better luck with the mechanics!
