Good Points

Nice sleek looking machine with exceptional write ups for it's price

Bad Points

Recently bought this player supposedly `Multi Region` player only to find that it will only play Region 2 and 0 properly. Region 1 plays in Black and white and poor quality. It will play cheap VCDs so can`t understand why it wont play Region 1 properly. If anyone has any helpful comments I would be grateful for an e-mail.

General Comments

If I can manage to get it to play multi region I should imagine it will be a mean machine.

Dawn from Cornwall says she can't get a colour picture with region 1 DVDs - is it because your TV wont play NTSC format. I'm guessing it's not the DVD player but the TV which is not compatible with US discs.

This problem is possibly caused by your TV not supporting NTSC.. I may be wrong, but Region 1 disks will play in NTS, therefore, you'll need an NTSC-compatible TV to view them properly. They'll play back poor quality and in B&W if your TV is only PAL or whatever...

As I've just said in another SD220e review isn't the multi-region thing nothing to do with "chipping" and all to do with the firmware which you can get from http://sd220e.chez.tiscali.fr

I've seen two simple methods to fix the black and white problems with region 1 DVDs. 1) Don't have your DVD player linked to your TV through your VCR. If you connect via SCART to your VCR and then from your VCR to your TV try linking from the DVD straight to the TV and this should fix the problem. or 2) Try changing the video out option in the setup. Select RGB rather than either of the other two options and it should work.

    Hope this helps.

I've seen this happen with an R1 disk due to my TV not handling NTSC correctly.
The solution for me was to input the scart from the DVD into scart 1 of the TV which recognises RGB rather than scart 2 of the TV which is S-Video only.

Apparently most TV scarts are set up this way.
