Good Points

Good top end speed,
Nice kick when the valves lift at 6000 RPM.
Group 14 insurance - Bargain (Only costing me £394 a year - Not Bad!).

Bad Points

A little bit plain, then again, car thieves ignore it!
Not enough feedback from the steering.
A little too much body roll, a friend's Civic Type R ran rings around me on country roads.

General Comments

The Toyota Corolla T-Sport is a lovely drive, starting with the cabin (2004 model) which is rammed with extras, including digital climate control, aluminium kick plates and pedals, electric everything and this really handy rear view mirror that merrily dips of its own accord when the usual idiot comes up behind you, lights-a-blaring.

Mercifully, lights-a-blaring fools behind generally are't a problem for too long, as when you stick your foot down, the VVTLi engine kicks you in the back, and leaves you well ahead of most cars on the road. Torque isn't too good at low revs, and you need to keep the counter above 4000 to make the most of the acceleration through the box. However when you hit 6000 and the valves lift, you fully understand what the L in VVTL means, it's as close to a turbocharger as any conventionally aspirated engine I've ever driven has felt. Motorways are an absolute dream; I cannot fully convey the joy felt at dropping nasty little BMW drivers!

Handling is, well.. Nice. People have ranted about this car's inablility to compete with the Type-R, and they're probably right. Then again, I'm a 31 year old bloke, not a boy racer getting kicks screwing my car round country lanes; and as such, do I NEED a Type-R for my purposes? The handling is crisp in all but the most extreme of cornering scenarios and the ESP and Traction control will coax the car around all corners (at least all the ones I've tried). So unless you're a nutter wanting to put your car through the road equivalent of an assault course, you'll be fine.

Value is good on the whole. Don't pay the £15.995 quoted though. Armed with some quotes off the internet, I marched into my local Toyota dealership and knocked them down to £14,250. This was rapidly knocked down further to £13,250 when I informed them I had the capital to pay immediately and they introduced a finance dodge where £1000 was knocked off the price of the car, by taking out finance and settling early. Without this deal, I would have probably only given 9 stars for value.

Finally, the boring stuff. Loads of luggage space, nice comfy seats and stuff. Starts every time; never broken down; Cheap tyres and servicing.

In summary.. It ain't sexy, It ain't a Type-R. But by gum it's fun!

Having just come back from a test drive in a T Sport, I agree entirely that it's an awesomely equipped car both in spec and engineering. I find it better looking than the Type R and disagree in part that you find it plain,; I'd call it more understated. If Toyota only had the cojones to upgrade their engine to a 2 litre, they'd finally have a car that would destroy the Type R.. I reckon.

Could not agree more. You get a lot of car for ya money. Slapping in a 2lt lump might only add a little more low down torque to the equation, but wouldn`t half make the insurance dearer.

Great review; having read it, I went out to test drive a T-Sport and am now awaiting delivery! I'm a 27 yr old teacher, so won't be needing the "boy racer" aspect of the car but it is certainly a step up from my present N reg Corolla. And the kick when you hit the higher revs...wow! As for insurance, I suggest shopping around; I've managed to get it for £290 with only 3yrs no-claims bonus to my name. Just counting down the days now and trying to find my mis-filed V5 !!!!!

My wife had a T-sport...I thought it was a lot of fun to drive, had the extras you noted and was very practical. The drawbacks that I had with car included the poor service and support from Toyota, the paint flaking on the door (mentioned by someone else as well...) and the need to replace the brake pads too often (neither my wife or I drove it that hard...). To be honest, I'd consider a used T-Sport if my wife wanted another car. As for me, I just spent less money for a used 330ci and got a lot more car.

Finally got my T-Sport at the end of August and have clocked up some 20000 miles since (big commute)! This isn't easy on the petrol (currently 94p/l) and keeping the car at high revs doesn't help much. Also, the noise within the car is high at 80mph (4000 rpm) so travelling at 60 has increased benefits. However, i find that there's some kind of oxymoron there - using the T-Sport to drive at a steady 60mph!!! It is understated and, as yet, nobody has tried to steal it. Also, it is good to know that you can burn the boy-racers if you need to and enjoy the smugness of it all when you're away from the traffic lights and charging high in 2nd (make sure the trip computer isn't displaying petrol usage at this point!!!). Handling is good, especially with the entrance/exits from motorways (high speed corners almost) and is reliable in towns. I was lucky in getting mine 2nd hand (although the other owner was Toyota itself so I'm the 1st "proper" owner) as I'd begrudge paying full whack for the car. In fact, with the distances I'm travelling, I'm considering swapping the car for the Prius or T-Spirit Corolla (and probably shall do when the thrill of the 6000rpm kick fades). It's not a cheap car to own but it is fun - what more can I say?
