Cheap insurance.
Expensive to repair. Leaking windscreen and rear screens. Poor quality of parts. Rip off Ford main dealers. Poor customer service from Ford UK. Parts can be difficult to get.
We purchased a new Ford Ka in January 2001. The car rear screen leaked from day one and still leaks. Occasionally we get 2 cm of water in the passenger footwell. The ka failed its 1st mot last year and needed £600 of work to pass. The steering rack failed (or so we were told by the main dealer) and they could not obtain a Ford replacement as they had stopped manufacturing them. (Whatever happened to the 12 year spares rule?) Pattern parts are available. We were told £445 to replace the rack. I complained to Ford Customer (we don't) care who said they could not comment. Eventually I took the steering rack off myself and investigated the problem (fortunately I am a qualified engineer, but don't like getting my hands dirty!) No grease on the track rod end (probably from new) New track rod that the main dealer said was not available: £8.14. Problem solved. The clutch went at 24,000 motorway miles. The front suspension rubbers went at 30K. The gearbox mounts go every 20K. Now the car at 40K is smoking badly: indicative of valve seal failure and or bore wear. The Ka has been carefully serviced at the prescribed intervals by a conscientious engineer.
Ford: designed for living, engineered to last (not very long....!)
