Good Points

Sweet treble, good separation, nice looks, very well built.

Bad Points

Spikes and downfiring bass-port mean these speakers take some effort to place correctly.

General Comments

With all the talk about the difficulty in getting stands for the Eltax Monitor III Stereo Speakers I have to be honest and say that when I bought these, I thought they would be fine on the floor (don't laugh). They had spikes on the bottom so I thought this would help isolate the vibrations enough to compensate for the low profile.

Boy was I wrong.

Unfeasibly boomy bass, harsh treble and no midrange to speak of. After experimenting with speaker cables, fiddling with tone controls and even turning them upside down, I decided it was the speakers that were at fault.

Again, boy was I wrong!

I decided as a last resort to try putting these on some makeshift stands (on top of another pair of speakers with an argos catalogue inbetween). What a difference. Music sounded like it was meant to sound - only problem was getting some "proper" stands to fit them on.

Actually, the stand issue is not as bad as all that. The actual size at the tip of the spikes is something like 145x155, so anything above this will be fine - there are plenty of stands out there with a big enough top plate. You can also unscrew the spikes halfway down to leave four metal feet on the bottom of the speakers, and placing blu-tack underneath the feet will give you a nice firm contact with the top plate - this still leaves adequate space for the bass port to function.

However, as I needed some fairly low, discreet stands (I have a wife) I decided to purchase the Gale Arc 120 stands from Richer Sounds which have a fairly small top plate. All you need to do is place something large enough to rest on the top plate (i.e. a floor tile) and your sorted. I used a simple A5 clip frame (glass and wood) which fits perfectly, and I have to say the sound is stunning. Deep but tight bass, nice detailed midrange and sweet treble. The separation is also very impressive.

So to sum up, these speakers take some effort, but they are well worth persevering with. For the price, I don't think you'll find better build or sound quality, but they lose points for sheer awkwardness.
