General Comments

The Sega 32X was Sega's answer to the Super FX chip found inside certain SNES games (Mario Kart, DOOM, Stunt Race FX etc). The super FX chip was a pieice of technology that allowed the SNES to produce psuedo 3D graphics that really shouldnt have been possible on the hardware. However, rather than incorporate new technology into Mega Drive carts, Sega introduced the 32X, a mushroom shaped add-on for the system that slotted into the cartridge slot. Into the top of the 32X went specially designed 32X cartridges. What the expensive add-on promised was imporoved graphics, new fully 3D games and CD quality sound. For the most part, these promises were delivered. Almost arcade perfect versions of Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter and a spectacular 3D Star Wars shoot-em-up called Star Wars Arcade were released for it. These were the only games really worth owning though, as many of the others were of a very, very low quality (Metal Head, Fifa 96, Mortal Kombat 2 etc). The 32X eventually died because it was an add-on without any real quality software support, and it was launched just as the Playstation and Saturn lurched onto the horizon with an Earth-crunching thud. The 32X limped off the scene in an unceremonious fashion at the end of 1996 and very few people noticed.
