Good Points

More refined mechanically and less intrusive engine noise, especially on fast roads. Fuel economy marginally better.

Bad Points

Lack of traction on wet roads and uphill starts. Wheelspins far too easily when weight carried in the back. Ride is noticebly worse than old Transit model on potholed roads and over speed bumps. Steering too light and feels vague compared to old Transit. Interior looks cheapened & steering wheel hard & a backwards step. Brakes don't inspire confidence.

General Comments

I've used a 85T300 model Ford Transit Van since March 2004 which replaced my previous 1998 Transit 120 model.
I can appreciate the improvements in refinement, but feel the new model has a lot of shortcomings and backward steps in useability.
My van is the lowest powered model and heavily loaded with equipment. Lack of traction due to Front Wheel Drive is my biggest complaint.
The steering also feels dead and overall this model is not a "driver's van" in the way the old rear wheel drive model could be piloted enthusiastically even on tight roads and in heavy traffic. These new Transits perform best when driven on smooth, fast roads at high speeds, when the refinement is a bonus. The suspension seems stiffer and the van gives a more jolty ride over bumps and rough roads. My van has been reliable but I know of many who have had a lot of problems and breakdowns with the new models.
I would go back to my old van if I could, as it was a better vehicle and nicer to drive.
In conclusion, I would recommend the FWD models only to light duty users. If you need to carry weight and want a van that drives like a van and not a dull FWD car, go for a RWD T330 or 350 model, as these are vastly better vans.
