General Comments
Flash / Cosmos Ms Miss Sara:
Just been on a Seven night cruise from Luxor to Aswan and back. This was the best holiday that we have been on. The boat was in excellent condition. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the facilities were very good. The sightseeing trips were all well organised and the Egyptologist was knowledgeable and friendly. The Cosmos rep was particularly good. The extra trip to abu Simbel and the balloon flight were well worth the extra expense. The all inclusive system was very good as all drinks on board were included. I would recommend this particular cruise to anyone.

on 8th Dec 2004The cabins are small. Shorts and tee shirts are fine in the day. Some people changed for the evening meal. There is a small pool on the sundeck. Take sensible shoes or trainers for the sightseeing as the ground is uneven and rough in parts. It will be very hot so take a hat and sun glasses. There is a reasonably priced laundry service on board. Drink plenty of water which is provided on the boat for you to take with you. As the cruise is all inclusive you won't spend much while on the boat even drinks and tea and coffee and bottled water is included. There is a jewellery shop and bazar on board and some of the trips include shopping opportunities like paparus, alabastar and a jewellers. there is also an optional visit to Aswan bazar which is an experience if you have never been to Egypt before. You have to haggle for everything. Try it but be patient. Hope that you enjoy it as much as we did. Barbara

on 9th Dec 2004Thanks for info. It has been difficult to find any info on MS Sara. Can’t find any pics or web sites for this particular ship. Sounds like you had a fabulous holiday.

on 10th Dec 2004Thank you for you information. Have just booked for Feb 2005, boat sounds good, your comments have re-assured us we have made the correct choice. Any advice on tipping, etc, did you take all the trips, did you get "templed out", did you book the Abu Simbel trip on the boat, and where does the balloon trip go from? So many questions but hope you don't mind.
Jeannette
on 11th Dec 2004Was interested to find this review as we are also booked to travel in Feb 2005. Please can you let me have some info re tipping, where the extra trips can be booked, size of cabins - comfort, views, cleanliness - did you feel it necessary to take all the trips to temples, of did you get "templed out". Also which resort/hotel to you move onto, your comments on that would also be appreciated.
barbaragibbs
on 13th Dec 2004As regards to tipping this was organised by the rep. You are given envelopes one for the crew and one for the Egyptologist and it is up to you what to give. The Egyptologist organised a tipping kitty for the coach drivers etc where we all gave £5.00 for the whole week. There is no need to tip the crew unless you want to as what is put in the envelope is divided between them. Just remember that they are very poorly paid and be as generous as you can afford.
You do not have to go on all the trips if you don't want to and it depends on your point of view if you get "templed out" I found the Abu simbel trip wonderful although expensive. it was £125.00 each and you have to get up at 2.20 in the morning but you see the wonderful temple as the sun comes up over the lake. You can book this and the ballon trip on the boat. This was £70.00 each. The balloon goes up on the west bank at Luxor. The Abu simbel trip goes from Aswan airport. All the travelling between the boat and these places is arranged for you. You just get up and go. The ballon crew come and collect you and take you across the river. The Egyptologist takes you to Abu Simbel
The cabins are small but the views are ok. We did not spend any time in the cabin anyway. The whole boat was spotless and the crew are very friendly and will do anything for you. I hope you all enjoy your trips as much as we did.Jeannette

on 6th Jan 2005please would you be so kind and give us some pointers re, paying for our visas at luxor on our arrival, do we pay in sterling or egyptian?. We are going on the 7 feb 05. Thanks.

on 7th Jan 2005Has anybody got any details on El Gouna The Three Corners Rihana?
barbaragibbs
on 7th Jan 2005You can pay for your visa at Luxor airport and I think that it is £15.00 and has to be paid in sterling. Sterling can be widley used in Egypt (even in the bazars) and anything you have added to your bill can be paid in sterling. If you are going to a hotel after your cruise you are supposed to pay any hotel bill in sterling. If you want to pay with Egyptian pounds you have to show receipts for changing your money so keep all receipts for this. There are ATM machines in Luxor and Aswan and a Cooks rep comes on the boat at Aswan so you can change money then. There is a limit to the amount of Egyptian money you can take into the country. It was 6000 Egyptian pounds each. Having said this no one checked at the airport and I have been twice. I changed my money before I went but the exchange rate was better when we arrived so don't bother to much about getting this done before you go. The people at the airport ask for an English pound for tips so its as well to take some of these to get a luggage trolley and smooth the way through the airport. The new airport should be open now which is a good thing as the old airport was chaotic. Have a nice trip.

on 11th Jan 2005Dear Barbara. Just one other point, I would be taking sterling travellers cheques will it be ok?. Would it be easy to change them if need be, say to pay for the extra trips like the hotair ballon or the flight to abu simbel. Or can we pay with the cheques. Thanks.
barbaragibbs
on 12th Jan 2005I'm not sure about using travellers cheques or cheques to pay for the extra trips but you can use a debit or credit card as this was the way that I paid. enjoy your holiday.

Hello just read your comments on the cruise ship. could you advise us before we book if an 11 year old boy would enjoy it. He is very interested in all things to do with history and is a fairly quiet child. we just dont want him to get bored on the ship.

We went on a Cosmos/Archers holiday on MV Le Scribe 2 years ago(which looks very similar to Miss Sara). Most of the cruise boats on the Nile look like horizontal tower blocks but Le Scribe (and Miss Sara) look like proper boats. The crew, Egyptologist, tour rep etc were all excellent - and when they say *all inclusive* they really mean it - all drinks, bottled water etc included + all the food and excursions you can cope with. The balloon trip is a must! + Abu Simbel if you can afford. If you have already seen the Giza pyramids etc I would recommend spending a relaxing 2nd week at Luxor and do all the sites that the tour companies don't visit. If you haven't been to Cairo before is is a cheap opportunity to include it in your holiday. But spend a few days at leisure in Luxor as well!
The only thing you need to prepare for is the backshees (expected tips by locals)- take plenty of small notes, coins, biros etc.
Don't be tempted to part with your money on the first day on suverneers (sp?) - wait a couple of days until you get used to the value of your cash!
A thoroughly recommended holiday
Cheers

on 31st Jan 2005There was an eleven year old on the boat when we went and she enjoyed it without being a problem for other people. The cabins are small and we spent most of our free time sitting on deck. there is a swimming pool and some gym equipment on deck. It should be possible to take games and books to occupy him in the free time. There was only one day when there was no trips which seemed a long day. The trips out do start very early but as he is interested in history he should really enjoy them. There is some evening entertainment in the bar. A meet the crew night, an egyptian night and some Nubian dancers. There is an optional evening visit to Karnak temple So there is not that much time to fill up and as it is very hot everyone needs plenty of rest. The egyptians love children and generaly make a fuss of them. Make sure he drinks plenty of water as, even in November, it was over 90. As the holiday is all inclusive he can have what ever drinks he wants all day long. It really is a good holiday and i'm sure he will enjoy it.

on 1st Feb 2005Any info on Three Corners Rihana Hotel in El Gouna? Do cabins on MS Sara feel very cramped?

Hi I have booked to go on the wonders of the nile cruise in may. I was wondering if at any point you will get a chance to see the pyramids in gizza?
barbaragibbs
on 7th Feb 2005The pyramids at Giza are a long way from Luxor where the cruise starts and finishes and I don't think that you will get the opportunity fo visit them unless you are staying in Egypt for an extra week after the cruise. If you are then you can arrange a visit with the travel rep.
lori831
on 10th Feb 2005Any idea on what temp will be? We are going on 10th October. We have cancelled week in El Gouna as transfer of 5 and a half hours is a bit too long. After reading reviews,we are really looking forward to the cruise.Would appreciate if anyone has any pics of MS Miss Sara. Thanks. Lori. x

Thank you for your answer about my son. We have decided to go and are really excited about it.
barbaragibbs
on 11th Feb 2005To Lorri the temperature when we went was 90 so it was very hot. This was the 1st November so it will be very very hot in October. Remember to take sun glasses, a shady hat and sensible shoes or trainers. It seems even hotter when touring the sights than it does on the boat. Always take plenty of drinking water with you which you get from the boat. It is not safe to buy water from the people at the sights. They sometimes use tap water to fill up the water bottles and this is not safe to drink. The sensible shoes are necessary as some of the sights are on fairly rough ground and some times you will be climbing on and off small boats which have no idear what health and safty regulations are. Enjoy your trip.

on 16th Mar 2005We have just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks holiday, 1 wk on the Ms Miss Sara (aka Flash II), 3 nights Le Meridian Pyramids, Cairo and 4 nights Jolie Ville Movenpick, Luxor. Boat was great fun, whilst it may not have been the most luxurious on the Nile it has high standards; food great and plenty of variety, even for vegetarians; boat clean and well maintained; crew very friendly (with a couple of exceptions but these were far outweighed by others) the cabins were small and the bathrooms basic (and I found the beds quite firm) but you don't spend too much time in them; they have safety deposit boxes, but no hairdryers but you can get one from reception. All trips great, Shereen our Egyptoligist knew her stuff and kept us on the go! Only one we were disappointed in was the felucca trip and botanical gardens - no wind so were were towed there and back and the gardens were quite barren, but that may have just been the time of year. If you can afford it I endorse Barbara's comment that Abu Simbel and the Balloon flights are the icing on the cake (take sterling to pay for extra excursions if you can as you lose out a little on exchange rates and credit card 2% charge). Pay at Luxor airport for visas - £10.00 each sterling, take pens/sweets for local children. Only problem we had on boat was strong diesel smell by our cabin for nearly a day when we reached Aswan. Lot of people went down with coughs/colds - probably brought out by someone from England! If you get gippy tummy get tablets from Egyptologist for 50p which do the the trick! If anyone wants to know anymore about Le Meridian Cairo and Jolie Ville Movenpick Luxor, let me know - they were both brilliant - food in hotels very cheap. Have a great time - we thought this holiday would be a one off but we will go back

on 29th Mar 2005We are cruising on MS Miss Sara 1st August 2005. I would welcome any info/tips on the Three Corners Rhiana at El Gouna - what is the 5 hour coach trip like, what to take on board, do you stop?
Katy131
on 24th Apr 2005We have booked to go on an Archers Cruise on the Nile in August 2005 and I've discovered a potential problem!
I've just read that, as Egypt is a very conservative country, outside of resort hotels "women should never bare their shoulders or upper arms, and neither men nor women should wear shorts" in order not to offend the Egyptians.
I mean, aargh!! I have to wear sleeveless tops and shorts to cope with heat or I get very bad tempered. If I have to cover up whilst in the beating sun on the tours in the daytime, it will ruin my holiday! I also have a 15 year old daughter who would be similarly stumped. Can anybody who has been on one of these trips confirm what women tourists actually wear in practice?
Whilst I would not wish to offend anyone, and would be more than happy to cover up whilst visiting religious sites, the thought of having to wear full "gear" in the heat fills me with dread! Help! :-)barbaragibbs
on 25th Apr 2005When we went on the trip all the women and men wore shorts and tshirts when touring the sights so don't worry about that. The only time you need to cover up is if you go on the optional tour to a mosque in Aswan. Have a really good holiday.

Hi! We've booked a week on ms miss sara and a week staying at three corners rihana for mid june. Just wanted to know what sort of times the excursions start in the morning? Can't wait to go as it sounds amazing!
Jeanette 1
on 2nd Jun 2005Help,I too am worried about what to wear on the trips, are sleeveless t shirts ok or will these offend people? Also do we need to take warm clothing for hot air balloon trip, is it cold up there early in the morning? We are travelling on the 20th June 2005 can't wait.
Jeannette
on 3rd Jun 2005As Barbara said, sleeveless t shirts, shorts are OK and I expect it will be particularly warm in June. Again the only time you need to be covered is entering any mosque. Just the usual safety aspects of high factor cream and a hat! You will need a light jacket/cardi/jumper for the balloon trip but by the time we went up (7 ish) the sun was already quite warm and that was March. You will find it cool when you travel over to the west bank for the trip I expect, but you don't need anything too heavy. We all wore trousers though - better for being hauled in and out of the basket! Enjoy your trip - we found it all brilliant.
Jeanette 1
on 3rd Jun 2005Dear Jeannette, Thanks so much for the advice, we are going on the same holiday as you, that is Nile Cruise, then Le Meridien Pyramids, then Jolie Ville Movenpick. Any other advice for us? Does my hubby need long trousers for evening meals and shall I take my summer dresses? Are there safes available for use at the Hotels? What does everyone wear on the cruise in the evening? Typical woman worrying about clothes aren't I. We are really excited about going especially since we read your review, thank you.
barbaragibbs
on 6th Jun 2005Hi On the boat there were no rules about dress in the evening. Some people dressed up and some just wore shorts and tea shirts. At the Movenpick you are not allowed in the restaraunt in the evening wearing shorts so hubby will need long trousers for this although you can eat outside. There is a safe in the cabin on the boat and the movenpick provides safty deposit boxes in reception I dont know any thing about Cairo hotel. I took a lot of summer dresses and hardly wore any of them although it is nice to change in the evening as the weather is so hot that a shower before dinner is very welcome. Hope that you have a good holiday. Barbara

on 6th Jun 2005Hi Barbara. Thanks very much for the info it was really helpful. We just need to pack now, I'm sure we'll have a great time, can't wait.
Jeannette
on 7th Jun 2005Hello Jeanette, very envious of you upcoming trip. Barbara's comments about correct about dress. Same applies at Le Meridien. Food at Meridien great and really reasonable to eat in hotel. There are some restaurants outside but we tried those in hotel and weren't disappointed. Favourite was the Nubian by pool and Med restaurant very good. Mexican bit more pubbish and smokey, lots of people just there for a drink, but good if you like the atmosphere, food still excellent. Lunches at cafe in foyer really good and cheap (you can see we ate a lot!). Hotel taxi (Avis) into Cairo (with driver) only about 100 egyptian pounds (L£) = £10.00, better than local taxis. Pool lovely, need baksheesh for pool attendants. Great hotel. Movenpick reckoned to be best in Luxor for location. Make sure you do watch the sunsets, eat the ice cream, take a felucca trip, use the water taxi. If you like horticulture, the tour of gardens was good. Great massage there too. Did you think you were going to have a rest? There were a few flies round pool but you can by fly swish from shop. Beds cannot be left reserved for a long time, attendants will move towels/books left unattended for more than a couple of hours. Visit La Baraka Bazaar on Kaled ebn el Waled St, opposite Sonesta St George, for good bargains (can use hotel courtesy bus to get there) - have a great time, we are sure you will.
Jeanette 1
on 7th Jun 2005Hello Jeannette, thanks for all that info, we shall make sure we do all those things. Its really helpful to be able to contact people when you are going somewhere where you have never been before. My hubby loves ice cream so he'll be eating loads of it, can't wait to get a massage. I'm sure I'll think of other things we'd like to know but your info has been brilliant, thanks a lot.

on 12th Jun 2005Hi, We are going to Egypt in July, a week on Miss Sara then a week at Hotel Sheraton in Luxor, I've read a few reviews and wondered about "baksheesh" could some-one please tell me if this is paid in sterling or Egyptian currency?
barbaragibbs
on 13th Jun 2005Most Egyptians will accept anything but it is usually paid in Egyptian pounds. At the airport when you arrive in Luxor the airport staff ask for pound coins so it is useful to have a few ready to help get a trolley etc. The tips on the boat are organised by the rep so there is no need to tip staff individually. Have a good time barbara

on 27th Jun 2005We have booked this cruise for March 2006, and I am very grateful that you have all taken the time to post these comments, as they are a great help.
We will be staying for a week at the Three Corners Rihana resort, El Gouna, and if you visit their home site www.threecorners.com, you can view pics of rooms etc. I have read a couple of reviews and they were both good, so fingers crossed.
One question, if you get your visa at the airport, are the queues really long? I have visions of being left behind by the rest of the tour group! It is just annoying that when applying direct to the embassy (by post) they only accept postal orders, which means you have to pay out extra.1forest
on 28th Jun 2005The q's at the airport for visa's aren't too bad they get you through pretty quick and don't worry the tour operator won't go without you.
barbaragibbs
on 28th Jun 2005I got my visa before I left. When we went the airport was pretty chaotic. The new airport will now be open so lets hope it will be better. The cosmos reps are very good and will not leave you behind so don't worry about that. They have a list that they check off when you get to the coach and don't leave till everyone is there. Have a really nice holiday barbara
Jeanette 1
on 9th Jul 2005We have just returned from Egypt what a fantastic time we had. The new airport is well organised the Cosmos rep will be waiting for you as soon as you get off the plane, he will take you to get your visa, it took us about a minute, there were no large queues. He will then take you to collect your luggage and makes sure you are on the coach. The organisation of the Cosmos holiday was second to none we had six flights in all, and we were never left hanging around at airports. The same applied on the boat there was no messing about, everyone had a wake up call each morning to ensure they were up, the coaches were always there bang on time. When we went to Abu Simbul we got straight on the plane, we were there and back in time for breakfast, it was fantastic. We were very lucky in having Miss Shereen for our Egypytologist she is lovely, she knows everything there is to know about ancient Egypt, she is extremely helpful and has a great sense of humour. We didn't go on Ms Sara because there weren't enough bookings, so we were upgraded to Lady Mary free of charge, so that was great. The hot air balloon was fabulous, again superbly well organised. We ate all the food salad, rice, fruit, chicken, fish etc. we had no tummy problems they wash everything on the boat and in the hotels with bottled water. If you eat out ask for recommendations and you should be fine. Thanks to Barbara and Jeannette for their extremely helpful advise, and hello to the couple on Lady Mary (who's names escape me) who were looking for me all week and only found me on the last evening on the boat. I was apprehensive about going to Egypt, but take it from me don't worry, relax and have a great time, we did.

IT WAS US THAT FOUND YOU ON THE LAST DAY !!DOREEN AND JOHN...I WAS THE GUY THAT STARTED OFF WITH NORMAL TEETH AND THEN THEY SUDDENLY WENT ALL BAD ON THE EGYPTIAN NIGHT!!(REMEMBER?)..HO HO!ANYWAY IT WAS NICE TO FINALLY MEET YOU..WE HAD FANTASIC TIME AS WE ARE SURE YOU DID.FROM START TO FINISH THE CRUISE WAS SUPERB. THE FREE UPGRADE TO TO THE LADY MARY WAS A BONUS. OUR 2ND WEEK AT 3 CORNERS EL GOUNA ON THE RED SEA WAS AN EXCELLENT COMPLEX.THIS MADE A PLEASENT RELAXING CONTRAST TO THE ON GOING SIGHTSEEING ATTRACTIONS OF THE NILE ...ALTHOUGH WE DID TAKE THE 6 HOUR COACH TRIP EXCURSION TO CAIRO FROM THERE.WE THOUGHT THIS WAS EXCELLENT VALUE AT 62 UK POUNDS EACH...
THIS HOLIDAY THROUGH COSMOS/ARCHERS IN OUR OPINION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED..GOOD LUCK...JOHN AND DOREEN..babrahams
on 19th Jul 2005Hi Barbara and Jeannette
My husband and I are going to Egypt in October - we are having a week on the MS Grand Star and then a week a the Grand Resort in Hurghada, and we have a few questions, if you don't mind (I know we are not on the same boat as you but they are general questions).
1. Do you think it is better to get the visa beforehand in the UK, or wait until we get to Egypt.
2. We shall be taking sterling travellers cheques and a small amount of egyptian money. Will this be OK.
3. We are a little bit worried about the tipping, and do not want to offend anyone - do you tip at the end of each meal, or at the end of the week?
4. Any other info about the money and the general dress code would be much appreciated.
Many thanks to both of you - I really appreciate it. Sarah.Jeanette 1
on 19th Jul 2005Hello Sarah, no need to purchase visa in u.k., they are very efficient at the new airport, also it only cost £10 sterling as opposed to £15 in the u.k. We didn't take travellers cheques, they didn't exchange them on the boat, apart from one day when Thomas Cook came on board. We took a mixture of English and Egyptian in cash, and paid for trips, and Hotel bill with visa, there is a small charge for this but it probably works about the same amount as travellers cheques. You couldn't pay the Hotel bill with Egyptian cash, but sterling was acceptable. There was a safe in our cabin. Don't worry about the tipping the reps will give you lots of advice. On our boat we gave the Egyptologyst £10 per person and she did all the tipping on our behalf. We took some pound coins for the airport but we didn't need them as we had pull along cases so we didn't need any help. You are given an envelope to tip the staff on the boat and it is shared equally amongst the staff, we did tip our
favourite waiter at the end of the week, same in Hotel but you are not obliged to do so. I was really worried about the dress code as you will have seen by my questions before we travelled, but again don't worry, anything goes in the day, as our rep said 'you will never shock an Egyptian'. Most people wear vests or t shirts and shorts, if you go to a mosque you'll need to cover knees and shoulders, gypsy skirts are great for mosques. I took light trainers but found them too hot so I just wore sandals. The dress code for the men for dinner on Lady Mary, was long trousers or jeans. For the ladies anything goes, from dresses to cut off trousers, wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. Have a lovely trip, you will love Egypt. Jeanette.babrahams
on 20th Jul 2005Hi Jeannette, thank you so much for all your advise, I really appreciate it. Typical female, I was worried about dress code - some cruises you have to really dress up, so I am glad that the code here seems to be more relaxed.
I will also rethink our money, especially for the boat.
We are starting to get really excited, its only 10 weeks away now - it still feels like forever, but we have been wanting to go to Egypt for so long, and now it is finally happening.
Really do appreciate all your help and advise, and will certainly use it.
Many thanks Sarahk3043 on 21st Jul 2005
I'm going on the cruise in August and I've been told that it's better to take Dollar travellers cheques rather than sterling, can you use these like cash on the boat and in hotels/shops, or do I need to get them changed into Egyptian pounds first?
suemorton01
on 2nd Aug 2005Just returned from two weeks in Egypt - one week on Lady Mary (upgrade from miss Sara as the boat was not full) and one week at Hotel Sheraton in Luxor. The service we received was second to none, couldn't fault it whatsoever, all of the people are absolutely trmendous and they cannot do enough for you. Top marks also to Cosmos rep Steven, info from him alone was spot-on. The Egyptologist for our group was called Ereen and was an absolute mine of information - she really did know her stuff, she kept you interested all through the tours with her knowledge. Can't wait to return.
