Good Points

Playback and recorded images very good, depending on compression.
Ease of use, and facilities offered.
880 in my opinion still one of the best looking recorders on the market.

Bad Points

The "Crux",(reliability), one huge headache for all owners of the DVDR880 and other models in the range.
Poor quality control during manufacturing of products.
Failure to recall all recorders that have common defects/faults.

General Comments

Well, what can I say, my DVDR880 had the same fate as everyone elses listed in these review pages.
Yes "No Disk", "Freezing on playback", "Jumping chapters", often not playing discs back at all, and the front flourescent display doing some strange things just to name a few.
My unit started playing up when nine months into the warranty,(predictable) but then was okay again. Leading up to the end of the manufacturer's warranty, the recorder just wouldn't play full stop. The unit went back to the retailer, who then forwarded it back to Philips for repair.
I e-mailed Philips for an explanation to the faults of their recorders.
Two days later I received a reply, but no explanation, except that they would repair my 880 out of the warranty period.
Three weeks later my recorder was returned to me, I noticed that the software version had been upgraded, and everything seems to be working fine, but the big question is, for how long...
No details back on whether the lazer unit was the cause or not, (very secretive).
Anyway I can imagine that the list of owners of the 880 will grow and grow on these pages.
The only problem is that an individual will think twice in future before purchasing a Philips product..

Regards Poons.

Just to feedback on my last two reviews of the DVDR880.

After many months and constant usage the unit is functioning now as it should.

The only thing that I find annoying about the 880 is that it doesn't like playing back certain brands of blank DVD+R media after recording to disk by using other equipment, whether branded or unbranded.

However after trying several brands of disc, the 880 plays back Mr DVD discs with no trouble at all, and these can be purchased quite cheaply from well known supermarkets.

Please note that blank media of most types will record and play back when using the 880.

"Update" Just to say that my Philips DVD-R880 DVD recorder is still going strong after all this time, with no playback or recording problems.
