Good Points

The location is excellent - on the river at Clarke Quay, 10 minutes walk from China Town & 10 minutes walk form Raffles

Bad Points

Advertised as a 5* hotel in the UK - IT IS NOT!!

General Comments

We stayed in the Merchant Court Hotel for 4 nights in Oct 2004 & were very disappointed. It was advertised in the UK brochures as a 5* hotel which it definitely was not.

Check in was painful to say the least with the staff member being very unhelpful. She would not give us the room upgrade we had booked nor allow us a late check out on our day of departure. We went back to another member of staff the next day who sorted us out immediately with no problem at all.

The room was very small & basic with need of redecoration & a new carpet. The bathroom at our previous hotel in Malaysia (a REAL 5* hotel) was bigger.

2 days into our holiday they closed half of our floor to start renovations. We were given no warning that this would be happening. The noise & the stench of paint chemicals were not pleasant to say the least.

As a basic place to stay in a good location this hotel is adequate but if you're expecting luxury here, go elsewhere.

On a final note, we booked in for an afternoon in the spa as a treat. Do not be fooled by the pictures on their website as they are of the spa at Raffles! The spa (if you can call a few tiny windowless rooms that) at Merchant Court was rubbish. The staff were on the hard sell for products & their skills as therapists were practically non existent. We'd had massages in Malaysia which were fantastic & expected the same level of ability here.
