Good Points

Looks Really Nice, plays everything I put in it, picture and sound are fine, £99.99p from Kwik Save, much better value than the unknown make's and models.

General Comments

The Philips DVD 634 plays everything but does anyone know the region hack? It's set to region 2 and I am sure it's just a case of a few commands on the remote.

Open the lid, press the digit "0" 5 times on the remote control and your DVD-player is ready for all zones...

  • Lone Ranger. on 21st Nov 2002

Thanks for the advise on the hack, does anyone know if the DVD643 will play RCE disks?

  • Ciaran. on 26th Nov 2002

Does that hack actually work? I'd love it if someone could confirm.

  • Lone Ranger. on 27th Nov 2002

Cairan, The hack worked for me and I have noticed it's been mentioned on other sites as well, Drawer Open and 00000 thats it. Try it in a shop when no one is looking.

This code didn't work on my Dad's DVD. Is anything indicated on screen when you put in the 0s?

  • Ciaran. on 29th Nov 2002

The code worked for me, thanks. Yes in the top left hand corner of the screen (if done correct) it should flash up "Zone Free". If this doesn't work try "0000" and then "1", this should decode the machine to Region 1. Remember the loading tray HAS to be open during this.

Hi I was just wondering if I had done this right, I did the 5 0s thing and in the corner of my screen it said "new region (0)"...is this right? Or have I done it wrong? what should it say? Also what home cinema speakers, subwoofer etc can I attatch to this if any? many thanks to any one who helps...

  • Ciaran. on 2nd Dec 2002

Hey Angel, thats right "0 region" is multi regional, you can also do it like "0000" and "1" for region 1, "0000" and"2" for region 2 etc. Don't know about the speakers though sorry. Good Luck.

I ALSO PURCHASED A PHILIPS DVD-634 YESTERDAY FROM WOOLWORTHS FOR £109.99. I FIND IT A GOOD ALL FORMAT MACHINE BUT THE QUALITY IS MUCH TO BE DESIRED. I GAVE MY DAUGHTER AN ALBA PLAYER THAT COST MUCH LESS BUT HAD EXCEPTIONAL PICTURE QUALITY. USING THE REMOTE "Region code hack posted by Richard at 2002-11-27 15:50:51: 1: open the tray 2: press (0)(0)(0)(0) on your remote control 3: press (0) for region free or 1,2,3,4,5,6 for other region 4: to check: open the tray and press display on the remote" I WAS PLEASED THAT THE CODE WORKS AND I HAVE NOW SAVED MYSELF SOME MONEY.

I have bought this dvd player and it is really good. I have also put in the five 0 hack which worked fine. The only problem is does anyone know if this allows you to play RCE disks???

  • Lone Ranger. on 6th Jan 2003

Hi Everyone, Regarding RCE disks, you could try entering the apropriate regeion code i.e. 00001 for regeion one or 00004 for regeion four I'm sure you get the picture, you can always revert to regeion free by re-entering 00000 at any time. I would be interested to hear from anyone if this works, it should do but as yet I haven't come across an RCE disk, at least I don't think I have, how can you tell if it's RCE, is it printed on the case or on the disk?

  • Qex. on 9th Jan 2003

You will know you have an RCE disk, when a screen appears with a map of the world, divided into the 6 different DVD regions. If you don't see this when you run a DVD, then obviously, either the DVD is not RCE protected, or the player can play RCE disks. Either way, you win. If you do, then you can use the region codes (eg 00001 for region 1), and see if that works. This way, the DVD player knows to be a region (1, say) player, and won't ask the DVD for it's region (which triggers the RCE protection)

Tried the five zeros hack - it worked fine for me. If you want to check the region, open the tray (leave the disk out) and press Display on the remote. On the second line it will say RG followed by a number. 0 is multi-region, 1 USA, etc. Does anyone know if this machine will display JPEGs?

Has anyone tried playing SVCD discs on the 634 ? I've tried it with two different ones, and with both discs it just starts counting tracks or something, and doesnt seem to stop.. it doesnt start the film at all.. Anyone know if im doing something wrong or ?

  • Lone Ranger. on 23rd Jan 2003

Hi Elvis, Re SVCDs, My player was purchased November last year and plays SVCD's and everything else no problem at all, it is possible that the main board in your player could be a different version or may have been manufactured by a different company, this is not un common as this is done to keep the price competitive, if you were to remove the cover and foreward the details off the main board I may be able to cross reference it with the board in my DVD634.

Does anybody know if the 634 is noisy? I´m playing dvd`s on my xbox but the fans are to damn noisy so I have to get a real dvd-player (a quiet one).

  • WiR. on 31st Jan 2003

Hi For jpegs pictures : (1) open the tray (2) on the remote control: 0 0 0 0 angle (jpeg on) 0 0 0 0 subtiltle (jpeg off) (3) switch off You can read jpegs pictures on the cd's root, because repositories aren't show. For SVCD, no problems at all, I try for XSVCD now but it's just because I have time to loose ... ADIEU

I can also confirm the 00000 hack works although I have not played a disk from any other regon than 2. My question is - has anyone in region 2 (i.e. PAL TVs) played a region 1 (i.e. NTSC TVs) on this DVD player?

The reason I ask is that i'm really tempted to buy the last series of 24 on region 1 for £25 less than it is on region 2!

    Cheers...

IVE TRIED PLAYING COPIED DVD ON PHILIPS 634 WITH NO SUCCESS, SHOULD THIS CODE ALLOW ME 2 DO THIS OR DO I NEED TO GET IT CHIPPED

  • Lone Ranger. on 9th May 2003

Hi, Does anyone know if the Macrovision protection can be disabled on the Philips 634?
    Regards To All, Lone Ranger.

  • Lone Ranger. on 9th May 2003

Hi KEV In Scotland, My 634 plays absolutly everything that I put in it (up to now anyway), the disks that fail to play, are they by any chance the same manufacturer and if so it may just be a compatability issue, try a different make of media and see how you get on.
    Regards, Lone Ranger.
