Good Points

They are easy to look after, cute, furry and cuddly!

Bad Points

They are quite hard to pick up.

General Comments

Gerbils are loving pets and I would certainly recommend them to anyone who wants a rodent. However, you would have to get two, because like lovebirds, they die of heart brokeness.

They are quick animals and are very curious about objects around them. They need their cage cleaned out and fresh food and water once every two weeks. They need a new bag of food around every two months.

Although it is usually recommended to keep gerbils in pairs (or larger groups) our gerbil, "Herbal", seems happy on his own. With regular handling he has become very tame and quite easy to handle (though still very fast!). Always needs plenty to chew on, like all rodents only more so. Apple wood or unprinted cardboard (such as paper towel holders) should be suitable. Donīt try a plastic acquarium type of cage as will be sure to chew through it. More active in the day than our hamsters. Favourite food, sunflower seeds.
