As a CSR with 118118, I must feel that this information is biased. We do our best, and I wish that customers would try to have relevant details ready; most do, but those few who don't tend to be the most aggressive customers. Mobile customers do have it bad though, as while 118118 only charge them 9p per minute (plus the 49p connection cost), their mobile companies add extra costs to bring that to 65p to 80p min. Thats expensive. And you do get charged for 0800 numbers; but why ask to be connected to them then?? Best to write it down and call direct.
We do try to help, and we ask for spellings and repeat the name because their are so many listings with similar names, and to be honest, some connections are bad with hissing and crackling. But if you do get the wrong number, please call back and complain. The csr will be reprimanded, and you will get given the number again (the proper one that is). There is a freephone number for our customer services if you want to make comments, and what customers say is important, as our services are changing due to demand. We now offer cinema times and listings, train times and are going to add to this service as much as we can.
There is a problem with refunds though, due to British laws, we can't take the cost of the call from your bills, because your telephone service won't allow us to interfere with their bank account. (Think about it, it does make sense, would you allow me access to your bank account??). This does mean we have to send you a refund via a cheque. It is the only way I'm afraid. but the number for customer services is 0800 389 1118
Call between 9am to 5pm Mon - Fri.
Any genuine comments will be genuinely listed to and acted upon...
As for any number that isn't listed, that is not due to us. We pay to access the national database of telephone numbers, just like every other 118 service, and most of the numbers we don't find just haven't been added. This is due to the telephone company they are with, not us, and not the database.
If you have any serious complaints, and you feel our customer services aren't dealing with it properly (or any 118 service) call ofcom, they are the official government body that deals with 118 services at www.ofcom.org.uk
Just as a closing comment, for those of you reading this, you must have net access... go to www.118118.com for free directory assistance.
Thank you....sorry for any spelling mistakes!
