Good Points
Maxtor USE TO know how to build quality hard drives.
Bad Points
For 10 years I only recommended Maxtor drives, but ever since they developed the 80GB+ drives, their quality has plummeted! I have a large stack of 80GB+ Maxtor drives that have failed after the 1 year warranty, but long before the useful life of the computers they were installed in.
General Comments
The hard drive is the single most important part of a computer. If any other part fails, you replace it, and you're back up and running, you loose the hard drive and you've lost everything you've ever done on that computer!
As a computer technician, I swore by Maxtor for 10 years, during that time I had only seen one Maxtor drive fail. Since their drives reached 80GB + the quality and reliability of Maxtor's drives has become the worst I have ever seen of any brand of hard drives. I have a stack of Maxtor hard drives that no longer work, all but 2 of which failed after the 1 year warranty was up, but usually within 3 years, no wonder they don't warranty it for that long anymore!
