Good Points

Very economical for the performance.
Quiet and smooth for a diesel, particularly on the motorway.
Massive torque.

Bad Points

Quite narrow power band, need to be accurate with gear selection in the lower gears.
Environment control a bit noisey and not great.

General Comments

I traded in my Golf GTI 1.8T for the Volkswagen Golf GTI TDi PD 150. I've had each for two years. Both family cars have the same power and fairly similar performance. I am very satisfied with both cars, if you want a comparison read on...

Overall the 1.8T is a bit more refined with the exception that at high motorway speeds the diesel engine is actually quiter than the petrol engine because of the lower engine speed and the 6th gear helps here.

The 1.8T is probably a little bit quicker in very artifical situations such as 0-60mph because the 1.8T keeps on pulling whereas the diesel starts to flag a little. However the diesel gives you a tremendous surge of power in more real situations such as 40mph to 70mph without caning it (torque!), which make it noticeably quicker in overtaking.

BUT you just can't ignore the mpg figures - 32mpg (petrol) vs 52mpg (diesel) which make it a no-brainer. Go for the diesel.
