I got a free pair of socks as my feet were freezing because I was sitting next to the door
Generally the crew were rude
Everyone on the flight was starving
The movies were awful
On an 11 hour flight from London to Los Angeles we were fed with 1 snack, 1 meal and 1 breakfast. The man I was sitting next to was so hungry (even though he had a bag full of snacks with him) asked if he could get any extra bread rolls with breakfast. After we had eaten breakfast, some woman decided she had waited too long to have her tray taken away and came and put them infront of the boarding door, which was infront of my seat as I had the seat at the front of ecomony. When the crew did finally get around to clearing trays, the steward clearing up trays at our end did not clear up our trays because but gave us a really dirty look instead as he thought we had put our breakfast trays infront of the door and went and got another breakfast. Well after waiting about half an hour after eveyone else's tray had been taken away and our awkwardly remaining the guy sitting next to me tries to take them to the nearest kitchen bit but is told to piss off basically, they were not interested, this kitchen dealt with first class and if he wanted to dispose of his trays he had to take them to the kitchen at the back of the plane. They did not offer to take the trays up there, even though that's what they get paid for, but they did point him in the right direction just incase he got lost going all the way up the other end of the plane. The stewards were not interested in the passengers at all and thank god we didn't have an accident as I do not think the crew would be interested in helping the passengers out at all, infact they would probably follow the safty procedures themselves, and be safe and just let you figure it out for yourself, that's how the Air New Zealand crew make you feel.
On my way to Fiji from Los Angeles, I told off for wanting to use a toilet I had been waiting ages for because he had decided to come along and check the toilet just before I was going to go in, found out there was no toilet paper, turned around, pissed off and shouted at me something along the lines of 'you can't use the toilet, there's no paper!'. I wish they were told in their training that there is a nicer way of saying that and that he could have gone and got more instead of locking the door and making the toilet out of use for the rest of the flight.
They have tiny screens you have to share watching with everyone else, which is ok but all the entertainment was crap. The movies were bad and of the four-ish radio stations they provide 1 is japanese and the rest are crap.
I had to fly Air New Zealand for my return trip too (Auckland to London) and it was lucky that I managed to sleep for most of it.
I have to say that I would recommend Air new Zealand to people I didn't like and I definately will not be flying with them again because I don't want to and hopefully because they are going down and even the kiwis know it and are glad for it. If you want to visit Lord of the Rings country, don't do it on the 'Lord of the Rings' airline, as they like to see themselves, as because its run by the dark lord.
