ccarroll's Review of Garmin StreetPilot III Satellite Navigation System

Overall Rating

Good Points

Easy to use. Small enough to store in car.

Bad Points

Map updates cost $150 a year! Takes about 20 to 30 seconds to caculate a route. Does not speak street name, just says direction to turn and distance from turn. To big to use any where but car.

General Comments

I have had the Garmin StreetPilot III satellite navigation system for almost 2 years now.

My gripe is that it that garmin rips you off for the map updates. They ship you the map updates for free but in order to use the map you must 'unlock' it for $150. The points of intrest seem to be about 2 years old when they are new so after i have owned the unit for 2 years now the points of interest are now 4 years old.

The unit comes with 128 megs of proprietary memory which is enough for about a 100 mile radius. If you are going to take a long trip you have to figure out how you are going and down load the detail maps you need from your computer.

I will use the garmin till it gets to inaccurate to tolorate. Then I will not buy another garmin product because everyting about is is proprietary.

I had a StreetPilot III for about 5 months, and found it frustrating at times because the maps were out of date. For instance leaving Manchester Airport on the M60 towards the M62, you are told to "exit left" at one stage, this is presumably because the next section of the M60 had not been built when the Garmin was programmed! And why does it say "at next junction keep right", when all the instruction means is "keep straight on". At every trip over the M1/M62 junction it told me that I was "off route, recalculating", for some unknown reason. I sold it on E-Bay.

Garmin is one of the best GPS systems. It is a pity, as you stated that for a reasonable price annual payment you could get all year updates for all roads. Cheaper to buy another GPS. Perhaps this is the hidden agenda.
