Good Points

The most fun you will ever have in your life guaranteed
The chance to see a huge variety of places in a short space of time
Making so many new friends from across the world

Bad Points

Not wanting to go back home after it's over
Cost - It is quite pricey but if you tried to do this yourself it would actually work out more

General Comments

Trek America is a tour company specialising in adventure tours for small groups of like minded people. They offer about 30 different tours ranging from 7 to 64 days covering different parts of the US, Canada, Alaska and Mexico. Groups are kept to a maximum of 13 people plus one tour leader. Accommodation is usually camping except in the big cities where a hotel stop is the norm. The tours usually only stop at each place for a maximum of two nights but the itineraries are flexible i.e. if the whole group agrees then an extra night can be arranged or one stop can be missed out.
Right, that's all the details out the way. Now I can tell you just how excellent these holidays are. I went on a Trek called the California Cooler (This was actually run by AmeriCan Adventures which was Trek America's sister company but now is part of Trek America. It's exactly the same set up though). On this trek we travelled from LA to Lake Havasu, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite NP, San Francisco, Pacific coast and then back to LA and Disneyland. All in 10 Days!! This seems like a lot and you think you're going to spend all you're time in the van but in fact you will see a tremendous amount at each stop off. The excellent tour leaders know exactly where to take you and will show you all the great non-touristy stuff too. So there's no time wasted trying to work out where to go and what to do. Frequent stops are also made on the journeys at places of interest. And anyway you find the van rides just as much fun as when you're at the stop overs. This is because you'll be having so much fun making friends with all you're new travelling buddies. Over half the people in the group are usually single travellers and are there for exactly the same reason so it's real easy to make friends. There are also so many nationalities represented which makes it so much more interesting. Trust me, in a week you'll feel like you've known these people for a lifetime. In a good way!
The cameraderie doesn't end there. At the campsites everyone has to pitch in. From cooking the evening meal and putting up tents to loading and cleaning the van, everyone helps out.
It's not just a sightseeing tour either. There are so many activities on hand. In the short tour I did we went hiking, flying in a helicopter over the grand canyon, a limo ride down the Las Vegas strip, sunset cruise in san Francisco bay and much more. Other tours offer white water rafting, horse riding, mountain biking, kayaking, baseball games..... the list goes on.
So if you fancy seeing some of the exhilarating and amazing people and places America has to offer I can only recommend one way of doing it. Trek America.
One word of warning though. It is quite expensive. But if you tried to organise your own tour, organising your own transport and accommodation it would work out more expensive. Plus you don't get the expertise of the tour leader who takes all the hassle and worry out of a trip like this and you don't get to meet 12 other like minded people.
In fact their tours are so good I'm going back next year to see the eastern side of the US.
