Good Points

Covered all main aspects of a vehicle check, including finance which some companies don't offer.

Bad Points

Quick & quite arrogant in the way in which the information was relayed across. Didn't leave much room for questions I had.

General Comments

HPICheck.com Offered all the main points with their car data check, I just felt I was being hurried along when I was Just trying to safeguard myself against the £8000 I was spending.

The last time I used this company was in January 2005 and consequently the details are now a little faded in my mind but I remember the gist of what happened: I had purchased a vehicle via an eBay auction and it was essentially brand new - the seller had won it in a local newspaper competition - it stood on her drive with 1.50 miles recorded - and had only been registered about ten days beforehand, and the usual documentation was unavailable. I did not know if the story was true. Possibly the vehicle had been stolen from a dealer, so I ordered an HPI check. The HPI result came through very quickly showing that everything was clear. However, HPI's 'small print' stated that it not been able to trace the vehicle. Apparently such is only possible after the vehicle had been registered for a month. (I think that was the period they told me.) I commented that, such being the case, the report was not worth the paper it was written on. The HPI chap who spoke to on the telephone told me not to worry as the bottom line was that his company was insured if the report's confirmations turned out to be fallacious! I replied that this was an imprudent way in which to do business (but likely used much stronger words) and that I wanted my fee returning and the report cancelling. Without difficulty was request was acquiesced in and I received a full refund cheque some time later - but not quickly. I did not like them taking on a job on which they could not effectively perform, taking my money, and their consequent stance of effectively saying "We'll take your money; make up a result; and if we are wrong you can claim on our insurance."

I've used HPI a couple of times. Wouldn't normally have bothered but a mate of mine did a check on a car and it came up as a write off and definitely not worth the money it was being offered for. Never had any problems with the service, and they've been helpful when I've had to phone up for explanations. I've also read some of the recent news on clocking so its worth checking the mileage on the car as well. I shopped about a bit before going with HPI - the AA seem to do a similar service covering the same sorts of things for a similar price.
