A good overview of what graphic design is.
It does not provide the 'core content' of graphic design: typography, colour and images.
Quentin Newark, What Is Graphic Design? (Graphic Design for the Real World S.) - This is a very good overview for beginners, especially if you have no idea of what graphic design is. I like the section on issues which are especially important to beginners who have no background at all. There are a lot of interviews with latest and current designers and lot of quotes from past gurus.
However, the core content of graphic design would be typography, colour and images. There is only one page or so overview of this core content. Therefore, if you would like to do graphic design, this is not a book that you can make frequent reference to. However, this would be excellent background reading before you start your work.
On the other hand, the portfolio section of the design studios are very current.
