grantnev's review of Subaru Legacy 2.5 GX

“The Subaru Legacy 2.5 GX Estate Car is an excellent...”

★★★★☆

written by grantnev on 20/07/2004

Good Points
Great to drive. Comfortable, spacious and chuckable. Performance is good for a bus. Engine is remarkably smooth and quiet - you would think it is a six cylinder.
Well equipped. Wacky frameless windows.

Bad Points
Bit thirsty.
Radio and electric windows work only when the ignition is on.
Auto gearbox can be a bit sluggish and would be better if it had 5 speeds.
Steering wheel a little large.
Too easy for the dog to switch on the heated seats

General Comments
The Subaru Legacy 2.5 GX Estate Car is an excellent bit of kit. Does not have the balls out performance of the Impreza but its handling is fun and road holding is tenacious. It has some lovely offbeat touches in an identikit car world. The Boxer engine is smooth and quite tuneful and remarkably quiet at cruising speeds. Frameless door windows on an estate seem wiered but are pretty cool.

The air suspension is height adjustable for crossing the odd field and the whole car has an air of no nonsense unpretentious solidity. The GX version with the Lux pack (this is a 1999 model) is very well equipped and lacks only satnav and a cd changer to be competitive in 2004.

My last car was a Porsche Boxster and this thing does not make me yearn for it - well not every day anyway!
