General Comments

We used Debenhams Gift List service for our wedding in June of 2003. It was very easy to sign up and came with perks such as a gold card, free use of the personal shopper, free makeover and Debenhams gives you a percentage of the total value of purchases made by your guests in vouchers as a free gift.

What you do is go in and sign up and they give you a little hand-held scanner. You then walk around the store and choose the items for your list by scanning the bar code. At the end (this will take at least an hour, if not longer), a customer service person in the gift list department will download the information from the scanner and print and show you a list, which you double check. You can always come back another day and add or change items. You are also given cards to enclose in your invitations explaining to people how to purchase stuff from your giftlist online, or in store. Your guests can then order the gifts, to be delivered by Debenhams (they do 2 deliveries, one the week before the wedding and one 4 weeks after), or to be collected in store and brought with them to the wedding. We were even able to track online what had be bought and by whom, in case we wanted to start writing the thank you notes early (as if we'd have had time!).

I found the service to be impeccable and the salespeople were very very helpful. We even changed our minds about some of the stuff and had no problems exchanging it. Plus their policy of giving out those vouchers left us with enough money to buy a portable TV.

The only real gripe I have is that I find that I don't like the selection of merchandise in Debenhams as much as other places. We chose Debenhams because we knew it would be easier for our guests, but ended up registering with John Lewis' as well because we preferred John Lewis' selection some of the stuff we wanted -- namely for crockery and bedlinen.
