Lives up to and perhaps even surpasses the hype!
None really!
DBC Pierre, Vernon God Little - I picked up this novel on the back of the media hype which surrounded it. It's a tale, which from any synopsis promised to be no more than a modern equivalent to a bad Jack Kerouac novel. However, within 50 pages the charm and grittiness (along with a real air of anger over American society & its apparent lack of justice) grabs the reader and never lets go.
The characters are as fascinating as they are infuriating. The plot borders on the predictable and at times lamentable. Yet somehow with a little dash of humour and from some magical touches you would expect from a much more experienced author, everything holds together.
In the end, reflecting back on it, it comes pretty close to being a contemporary classic.
