Smeg WM16AAA - After one month the doot catch started playing up, had to fiddle with it to open. Smeg replaced and a month later same again.

I have also had the same problem with the door. The engineer has just left, this is the second time he has been out to me for the same problem. I asked if it was a common problem and he said not really but I am beginning to think it is. The problem was we have had the machine longer than a year but only started using it in May 05 as the house was being renovated. Smeg agreed to fix the problem for free, very good of them I thought until I got the bill for the labour cost. I will never buy another Smeg appliance again.

It is a design fault. I played merry hell with Smeg and they sent me a brand new machine which is the latest model with the door catch on the control panel. I've used this for a year with no problems. My advice is insist they do the same for you.

Thanks for the feedback Fezzalad. Do you really think they will give me a new washing machine when they charged me the labour cost of repair! As I said in my earlier comment we had the machine longer than a year probably buying at the same time as you but we didn't move into our house until May this year so the guarantee had run out even though we had only been using the machine since May. It wasn't great from the start, I use to really have to slam the door for it to close and setting the programme the machine would not start until I pushed on the door. The final straw came when the door actually opened during a wash saturating my wooden floor. All I can say is I am glad I was there when it happened otherwise it would have cost us thousands replacing the floor.
