Alien - "In space, no-one can here you scream".
One of the greatest taglines in movie history suits the film perfectly. The first film to combine horror and science fiction, Alien has been forever imitated, but never matched and is best known for launching the career of Sigourney Weaver as flight officer Ripley.
It also launched the career of Ridley Scott, one of the great visionary directors of our time. He perfectly uses the tension tricks Steven Speilberg used in Jaws by keeping the creature unseen until the second half. Why has this man never won an Oscar? A man whose other greats include Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, Legend, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.
The cast is excellent as well. Instead of having A-listers, Ridley casts 2 British stage actors (John Hurt, who suffers a fatal case of indigestion and Ian Holm, who carries a secret), American character actors (Harry Dean Stanton, Tom Skerrit and Yaphet Kotto) and unknowns (Weaver and Veronica Cartwright).
What makes Alien stand out is that while Star Wars revoulitionised the genre with an old fashioned romp, Alien was dark, gritty and almost real. It was followed by 3 sequels - the good (James Cameron`s Aliens), the bad (David Fincher`s Alien 3) and the ugly (Jean- Pierre Jenut`s Alien Resurrection). If you still can`t decide between Scott`s horror-fest or Cameron`s bug-hunt, let`s just call them both classics.
