Good Points

Borders are intelligent, loyal and affectionate dogs that have little or no health problems.

Bad Points

Originally bred for hunting, they have natural instincts to do so. Coat needs stripping once or twice a year.

General Comments

Border terriers are a popular breed and rightly so. They are said to be a large dog in a small body. A recent study by Which magazine rated them 2nd in suitability as a pet. My Borders are super dogs, great with children and very good fun. They also act as pest controllers in my semi-rural area.

I am thinking of getting a border terrier - we have 10 acres of land bordering farmland away from roads and wanted a family pet who would also do some vermin control. I have spoken to some very experienced breeders who suggest that I would have to have a fenced in garden and that if the terrier was allowed free access to land (as our lab pup and rescue collie are) they would disappear never to return - any thoughts?
