General Comments

The Audiotrak OPTO Play is a very small and simple device, it's simply an AKM 24-bit 96KHz D/A convertor packed into a small plastic box connected to a USB decoder. This device plugs into the USB port and works without having to install any extra drivers with most versions of Windows in use today (98/ME/2K/XP). It can't get any easier to install.

On the downside, this device features only a single 35mm stereo minijack output. The package also includes a clear plastic adaptor to allow connection of regular TOSlink optical cables through the same 35mm stereo minijack to provide optical digital output. Hence, this device is only for music lovers, since there's no multi-channel support for DVD movie watching.

However, it does what it's meant to do very well. When auditioned over a pair of Klipsch GMX A-2.1 together with an Audigy 2, the OPTO Play brings out more details in the highs, and presents a warmer vocal/midrange. However the lows aren't as punchy as on the Audigy 2. Soundstage is also improved over the Audigy 2.

This said, the OPTO Play makes a good and simple stereo listening device. At about US$58, it is also a decent purchase, so if you wish to enjoy your music better than your SoundBlaster Live! or on-board AC97 audio, but have no need for multi-channel audio, consider this little gem from Audiotrak.
