General Comments

German Shepherd Dogs are the best working breed, but at the same time, are excellent family dogs. They require a lot of time and attention, but for this you will be rewarded with loyalty, obedience, and devotion. German Shepherd Dogs are very clever and trainable. They are very intense dogs and will focus on their training with single-mindedness. There is a misconception that German Shepherds are vicious but this is only the case if they are badly raised. German Shepherds are seeing eye dogs, search and rescue dogs, and therapy dogs. In fact, they love children and are friendly with strangers if they are socialized during puppyhood (the value of socialization in all dog breeds is under-recognized as a method for watchdogs.
If you are not an active person, a German Shepherd is not a good choice. They are very active dogs and require a lot of exercise. Because they are so smart, they need frequent human interaction and lots of play time. If left alone or neglected by their owners, they are clever enough to get into all kinds of trouble: digging up the yard, chewing couches, tearing through the garbage, chasing cats, etc.
Generally, GSDs are low-maintenance for grooming, but they do shed. If you invest the time, owning a German Shepherd Dog is extremely rewarding.
