General Comments

Gate Of Flesh deals with the post-war depression in Tokyo and exposes the mob mentality of people living in desperation. Suzuki alienates us by refusing to explain various character's relation to each other or explore their personalities, unfortunately he also does not evade any stereotypes here, and hands us a totaly bewildering, or maybe just totaly rubbish plot. The relentlessly 'artistic' shots with striking use of colour seem to strike us a few times too many and the whole thing becomes pretensious after a while. Although the sex scenes are far from graphic the overtones are; jap girls being strung up and whipped are not a huge turn-on, just a huge cliche!
