General Comments

I have recently bought a Peugeot 106 1.4 XSi off a bloke off of ebay for £300, it was a bargain. Its blue. Because im to young I can't drive it properly yet, but its in my garage and im modifying it like mad.
Just bought k&n air filter,5 inch magnex exaust it purrs. I also bought a momo steering wheel and 15 inch momo alloys and lowerd the car 50mm. Im an apprentice mechanic, I fitted everything myself. Cant wait to pass my test so I can drive the damn thing properly. Anyone got any suggestions what I should do next.

if i were you id stop modding it and make sure you can afford to insure it because i have trouble getting insured on less powerful cars than that. Its gonna cost you at least £1500 to insure i reckon coz i've tried and thats what i got. I hate insurance!

  2. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 14th Jan 2005

Just try and insure it? :|

  3. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 18th Jan 2005

A lot more than £1500, I've got the same car, I've got 1 years NBC and that car costs me £1900 without mods :|, so he's just plain NOT going to get insured.

  4. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 19th Jan 2005

I started driving middle of last year and my insurance wanted £2000 from me for my Nova SR. It has the same 1400cc that this XSi has but is not fuel-injected. To get anywhere near something I could afford I had to do pass plus which brought it down to a grand. Oh yeah that is also with no mods!

  5. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 21st Jan 2005

How can you compare a Nova SR to a 106 XSi, an XSi is a 100bhp machine, a Nova SR is what?, about 75-80? :/ a Nova SR is far cheaper insurance than the XSi :/. just because it's a 1.4, doesn't mean it's the same engine, the XSi is a very fast 1.4 and insurance class 10, your nova is possibly the same insurance class as the Corsa SRi?, same engine presumably? just not fuel injected.

  6. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 24th Jan 2005

Ahh but your forgetting the reputation the Nova has. And just because it isn't as powerful it does not mean it isn't as fun etc... I admit that the XSi is probably a bit quicker, but you'd be suprised at how quick my nova is and it only has a K&N on it, with the added magnex soon. I'm not trying to be big headed at all but they are quick little cars and they weigh absolutely nothing. Still after all this my insurance still wanted 2k off me. But I dont think so.

  7. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 24th Jan 2005

Right I did write a long post just now but then my computer crashed so i'll shorten it...

Nova's are quick (well mine is), my mate in his Fiesta Si cannot catch me, and the SR's have a reputation of being quick that is why insurance is sometimes high. My car is near standard except for K&N and next week a magnex is going on.

  8. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 25th Jan 2005

Yeah, novas are pretty quick but not fast, but compared to one of the fastest 1.4s of there time... there not, :|, you can beat an Si because there 16V with a cat, if you raced it's baby brother the XR2i, i'm sure the outcome would be different, the Si is perhaps... infact is.. a rubbish car :|.

Your car will out accelerate, a reasonable amount of cars on the road under 1.4, but it still has the same engine as a corsa, but because of how light the car is, there's more of a HP/weight ratio, but from what I can see on tests/studies performed by Vauxhall, it will max out at around 110mph, 10.5ish seconds to 60, you may here different ofc, or your speedometer may tell you different.. but.. a vauxhall speedometer is about as reliable as the english goverment :P

don't get me wrong, it's a nice car, but to compare it to an XSi would be criminal :|. from my point of view to find a faster standard 1.4 (and below) than an XSi, is near to impossible, don't dare start posting Volkswagen Polo G40 either :)

  9. Dave Ellis Rank: Corporal on 26th Jan 2005

You're right the XSi is rapid, but its not the fastest 1.4 out there. First off, you've got the renault 5 GTT, which would wipe the floor with it, even standard. Then we have the Metro GTi, with its 16v multi-point injection engine putting out about 110 bhp standard. Again, not a lot of competition. Too rare and expensive? Do what I did and buy an AX GT. About 90bhp as standard, not a huge amount, but it weighs about as much as a fart in a paper bag, and as such is very rapid. Think 0-60 in about 8 seconds, and a conservative estimate at top whack of about 115, give or take a bit with the speedo wobbling (actually read 125).
Having said that they aint that reliable, so I am looking into buying a 106 XSi as something still rapid, but rapid every day.

  10. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 26th Jan 2005

I know, and im not trying to compare it to the XSi, but mine is pretty quick. And the standard book figure of 0-60 in 12 seconds is rubbish. I've had my car hooked up to my uncles GPS system, which has a rather accurate speedo on it and we timed my car at just over 9 seconds.

  11. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 27th Jan 2005

Renault 5 GT Turbo, you can't really add to the discussion, it's a rare car to find like a G40, the metro GTi hmm..., it's 16 valve with a cat, XSi is a decat 8 valve, it will move off the mark faster, so the 0-60 will be around the same for both cars and the top speed is slower than an XSi.

Only thing that would be better is the brakes, because the XSi brakes are shockingly bad, fitted the back axle of the Saxo VTS so I had disc instead of drum on the back, recommended upgrade for an XSi owner.

  12. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 27th Jan 2005

And 110bhp standard? I thought it was 8bhp more than the SPi, making it 103bhp?

  13. puggy Rank: Lance Corporal on 31st Jan 2005

Thats a healthy little discussion you've got going there guys!To the matey with the 1.4xsi, have you had any major problems with yours? I'm considering buying one (when I eventually find a decent one). I've had a 106 1.4 roland garros which had 119,000 miles on it and then the head gasket went...which is fair enough. The gearbox, cluch and ECU was replaced at 95,000 miles. Hows the fuel consumption? I payed £800 for insurance on my last 106 for the year so probably looking at what £1100 for a 1.4xsi.. got 1 years no claims?
I'm looking for a standard car, any ideas on the best places to find one? All the other 1.4's are rubbish by the way.

Thats a healthy little discussion you've got going on here! To the matey with the xsi..i'm considering buying one soon (when I eventually find a decent one) and was wondering have you had any major problems with yours? With the money i'm looking to spend it will probably have about 90,000miles on the clock. I've had a 106 1.4 roland garros before which had 119,000 miles on when I sold it (the head gasket was about to go and couldnt be bothered to fix it) and the gearbox, clutch and ECU was changed at 100,000 miles. Is there anything extra I should be looking for when viewing one? Also where is the best place to find one? Was considering a fiesta 1.4si but would prefer a pug! They wipe the floor compared to the other ones of its class... they look sound as well! Cheers guys.

  15. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 3rd Feb 2005

Well... my cars only done 46,000 miles, it was owned by an old woman before I bought it 2 years ago, and in the 10 years she had it, she did around 3000-4000 miles a year in it, and had it servived twice a year, so i've never had any problems with mine as of yet, apart from when I had to replace the radiator in 2003, and the brakes aren't that good on them as standard, but everything else has been sound, aslong as they've been looked after and haven't had some chavvy boy racer in them, then it should be fine. Another one of my mates has one also, only problems he's had are a lot of wear on his brakes and he's had to change the radiator twice, oh and his spare wheel dropped out from the back of the car :|, but yeah, apart from that, it's a marvelous car!

  16. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 4th Feb 2005

'oh and his spare wheel dropped out from the back of the car'

LOL not that its much of a problem then

  17. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 7th Feb 2005

Bracket had been banged on something before he'd bought the car, obviously weakened through time, possibly someone hit the top of the curb when they were backing out the drive... or something to that effect, but easy enough to weld a new bracket in place, but yeah.. can still remember the day he phoned me up asking if I could get him the gas welder from work because his spare wheel fell from the back of the car when he was going over a speed bump.

but yeh, think that's rather a rare case tbh :P

  18. puggy Rank: Lance Corporal on 8th Feb 2005

You were lucky to find an xsi that had been owned by an old dear! Did she rag the nuts off it?! Well im still looking for one and getting very dissapointed by the lack of choice on the autotrader website. I've got a quote for £1050 for the year which isn't too bad considering i've only got 1 years no claims and had a liscence for two years. Guess it depends on where you live. There are plenty on ebay but I dont trust that...especially as you cant drive them first. Anyways cheers for the help. Oh yeah, do they come with a keypad immobiliser or alarm as standard? I live down south but probably be using it at uni in Liverpool, and considering i saw a brand new M3 which had been keyed and spray painted...I dont fancy my chances!

  19. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 9th Feb 2005

Depends if the person opted to have the standard alarm + immobiliser, but yeh generally they do, but it's rubbish :|, with the problem being that it'll be a 12 year old alarm if no ones decided to ever replace it and when i was looking for an XSi, i noticed that was the case. i've had a C5T2 fitted to my car quite recently, and that's great. I'd rather someone had ragged the car slightly, because my breaks were corroded due to lack of use and my engine needed badly blasting out :|, i had to rag it for 2-3 weeks just to open it up a bit better, but it's fine now, only just taken it for a service today funnily enough and everythings fine apart from the exhaust finally needs replacing despite my 6 months of just welding it trying to save myself from buying a new one :(

Some people are saying that this car costs 1900 to insure thats not true, you've just gota work it out. Im 19, passed my test 2 months ago and I can get insured on a 1.6 106 xsi for £1220, with no NCB at all. One trick you can use is, add your mum to the insurance, it took about £450 off mine. Btw this is with elephant.co.uk

  21. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 22nd Mar 2005

Insurance is different for everyone, depending on where you live and such... some people get it alot cheaper than others do.

  22. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 22nd Mar 2005

But you're 19, any 17 year old trying it can say bye bye to all their life savings trying to insure one.

  23. klappy2222 Rank: Lance Corporal on 23rd Mar 2005

Maybe so, but I live in a fairly high risk area postcode apparently, even though you wouldn't expect it. My mate can get it for under £1100 at his address and he is 18 and passed his test just after me at the beginning of feb. Your job makes a massive difference to the premium as well though, and you can't really change that.

  24. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 23rd Mar 2005

Still costs me £1900 with 1 years NCB, which sucks but it's quite possibly because i've got 3 points on my license for speeding, last year it cost me £2200 when I was 17.

  25. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 24th Mar 2005

Yeah insurance as a whole is stupid, they wanted £2,000 off me for my SR but I wasn't gonna pay that! Pass plus brought it down to £960

  26. Pommeh Rank: Sergeant on 24th Mar 2005

hmm... :|, I don't work, I'm a student at Nottingham University, but generally with Nottingham being a big city, the prices are a rip off, London is far worse though.

  27. klappy2222 Rank: Lance Corporal on 29th Mar 2005

Yeh well I live in Birmingham, so thats a big city and I live in a pretty nice area as well. I thought this would bring the premium down, but it actualy makes it higher. Last year on my road there was some kind of "Gone in 60 seconds" style car boost of 11 cars. Insurance companies log that kind of thing I guess, because my dads insurance went up for the first time in 20 years!

  28. klappy2222 Rank: Lance Corporal on 29th Mar 2005

What insurance company is the cheapest? What company are you lot using?

  29. ryan wynn on 16th May 2005

yea rip yhe engine out of it and put a gti turbo engine in it like mine then you will see and hear it shift

I owned a 106 1.6 xsi for two years. Best fun i have had on four wheels. All you need to do is spend as much as you can on tyres and let the peugeot suspension magic do the rest. My best moment was overtaking a e36 m3 evo round the outside on a tight two lane bend. The guy was already steering into a full on tail slide and i passed him on the outside. Shame they don't make Re 71 Bridgestones anymore as the little pug seemed to like them. Anyway keep up the stories lads as it seems no-one has been here for a while!

  33. Mallaby106 on 6th Mar 2008

Try Tesco car insurance i found them pretty cheap or u could move over here to the Isle of Man where u can witness 17 year olds flying around in Impreza Turbo's and havin no trouble getting insured. I've had 3 XSI's and they've all been amazing, the 1st 1 I got off a m8 for £50 and had 152k and still went like the clappers until the clutch went and i scrapped it. The 2nd 1 i got for £100 which I kept for a couple of years and only ever changed the oil. Then i got my 3rd 1 so i stripped a few bits off my 2nd 1 then scrapped that as well. The 3rd 1 I still have and now has a 1.6 16v gti engine in it and is super quick. Check out XLR8.co.im and go to gallery then your cars then look for Mallabys cars and you'll see my pics. Cheers.
