Good Points

Batterly life double that of any competitor, including ipod. 14 hours plus.
Easy to load mp3s. No restrictions as with ipod.
Supports more formats than any other comparable player including ogg vorbis.
Sound quality is superior to ipod (tested with Sony mx71 earbuds)
Plethora of features (audio recording, fm tuner, optical in/out, LCD remote!)
Firmware updatable

Bad Points

Does not "yet" support secured wma.
Hmm, can't really think of any other bad points.

General Comments

I recently purchased this IRIVER IFP-140, and in short, it's the best hard drive based Portable MP3 player you can buy. There simply are no compelling reasons to puchase an ipod over this unit unless you simply MUST have the "ipod" for emotional reason, or because you find the ipods "wheel" superior to a thumbstick. Some may feel the ipod looks slicker, but that's not a functional issue.

Sound quality is better than an ipod (this was a subjective test between the Iriver and 2 ipods) according to myself and 2 ipod users where I work.

Features are the best availabile, including an fm tuner, optical in/out, audio recording with internal mic AND an external lapel mic, etc etc. Simply can't be beat.

Battery life. Well, how does 14-16 hours real time compare to the 5ish you get out of an ipod?

What can I say? I love the unit. If you want the best for your money, this is it. If you simply must buy an ipod, well go ahead, but you'll be missing out if you do.

This is a really nice review - However, the model you are referring to is an iHP-140, not an iFP-140. There's a big difference. The iFP (which is the basis of these reviews) is a Flash-based unit with no recording, and it's much smaller and less expensive. Hopefully this clears up some confusion, rather than creates it.
