Good Points

This Rifle has a very short lock time that, when coupled with the recoil cancelling mechanism, increases the accuracy of this rifle to a great degree. The side cocking lever is sufficiently long that great ergonomics are achieved. With a scope mounted this rifle is a tack driver. The power of the gun is first rate. I never have any problems whatsoever with 50 yard shots, especially with medium wieght pellets. Overall this is my favorite springer.

Bad Points

This rifle weighs too much to carry around for long periods. The recoil cancelling mechanism is louder than I like. My particular rifle is very quiet. the only noise I really notice is the barrel shift/stop.

General Comments

The velocity of the RWS Model 54 air rifle is as stated by the mfg spec right out of the box. Treating the anti recoil mechanism with moly, and treating the spring with dampening gel lubricant was necessary to render the gun really quiet. Once this was done the rifle really became the best springer I have ever shot. Knock-down power is very satisfying. The RWS m-54 is unique, and the price is not bad for what you get.

    Hi Mochaman,
I too have a RWS 54 in 0.177. What type of moly paste? for the anti-recoil system? molybdenum? Where can I get some in the Seattle/Renton area? Looking for area shooters to hunt pests. can you point me in the right direction?

I have never seen an RWS labeled gun come remotely close to their advertised velocity with anything heavier than Beman Lasers. You sure your Air King wasn't so new it was still dieseling.

I believe the Authors comments about the velocity of the RWS M-54. I had one in .177 and chronographed it with a number of pellets. The lightest pellets hit 1200 fps, 100 fps faster than the RWS velocity rating.
I also had an RWS 6G, the recoilless pistol, and it too, exceeded its rated velocity.
In fact, all of the air rifles I chronographed, Beeman, RWS and Gamo, met their factory velocity ratings, except for the RWS Model 24, which missed by about 200 fps.
Most manufacturers rate their airguns with the lightest pellets, for advertising purposes, but are truthful.
