Good Points
Reliable, excellent off-roader, quite easy to repair, excellent torque when crawling slow, spacy, fun to drive.
Bad Points
Bit thirsty, bulkhead rusts easily, turning circle.
General Comments
We have three Land Rover Stage 1 Safaris. I also own prototype# 4 of these very special Land Rovers.
The thirst problem can be solved by an LPG kit. Thus it is more economical to run my other (82) Stage One than my husband's little Citroen.
Rust is a problem and brake drums go fast if you ride her fast. The turning circle can get on your nerves, but then I still would never drive anything else. Where diesels get stuck for lack of power, a Stage One gets through at ease.
You have all the advantages and the charm of a Series Land Rover with the power of a V8 engine.
Of course these old trucks need attention. Give them their feed of 20W50 every 5000 miles and the engine will last.
