Good Points

Ambitious product. The anti-virus seems to work well although I haven't had a virus or trojan in the last few months since my previous anti-virus product expired. In reality, there's no substitute for sensible precautions.

Bad Points

This is a very buggy piece of software. The installation is problematic, the program is extremely resource hungry, the anti-spam is a disaster and the privacy control is annoying and specious. Given the extent to which it interferes with the OS and other programs at a relatively low level, it really shouldn't have been released until it had been much more extensively tested.

General Comments

The anti-spam part of Norton Internet Security 2004 tied up my mailbox on the server when using Mozilla as a mail client. This could only be fixed by disabling the Anti-Spam. However, even when disabling Anti-Spam, it continually restarts Outlook Express which can only then be used if I kill ccApp.exe which Norton say reduces my protection. The Privacy Control is so severe that many interactive sites cannot be used unless that too is disabled. I've had several other problems with the software which has led me to turn off many of its features. Having now read many of the user reviews, I realise that I am not alone in finding this product difficult. The thing that I find most odd is that most professional reviews are positive whereas most user reviews are negative. It seems that if you are prepared to spend huge amounts of time tailoring this product to your system, then you will probably be able to get it to just about work provided that your system is modern and fairly straightforward. The question is whether you have that time and you are unable to keep yourself from opening email attachments. Personally, my own rules plus Mozilla's keep all the junk out.
