Good Points

Magnesium Frame, WL Gore membranes, built in phone book, Lithium-ion battery, carry clip, availability of plug'n'play accesories, plenty of battery life, status display.

Bad Points

Big, aerial is weird (not that this bothers me) software is slow and unreliable, terrible support and warranty service.

People call it "The Bayonet"

General Comments

I bought an Ericsson R310 mobile phone in january of 2002. After around 4 months of minor sorts (power offs and freezes) i decided to send the phone for a software update. The phone came back with another problem - a key pad fault. The result was that each time the 7 key was pressed 9 would appear onscrean instead. As you can imagin this was a disaster when it came to sending SMS and ringing people. The phone went back again. It came back with the same fault. A little phone call to the helpdesk revealed that the handset should have been exchanged but for some reason had not.

So now i'm waiting for a new handset which should arrive next week.

Apart from the disasterous customer service and software (hopefully it'll be sorted) i've been impressed with the handset. Unlike some critics of the phone, mine has been subjected to abuse non-stop: from immersion in water to drops and dusty environments. Almost any other handset (bar the R250 PRO) would be dead by now. So it sorta makes up for its flaws.

It is still available in small quantities from various online specialists.

Thing is though, it throughly beats its most common rivals - the Siemens M35 (M45 not being around much) and the Nokia 5210 in terms of shock, water and dust resistance and does it for a better price.
The only thing that might compare is the Nokia 6250 - but i would not trust its waterproofing half as much as the WL Gore membranes featured on the R310.
