Redmist.'s Review of Gigabyte GA-7VRX Motherboard

Overall Rating

Good Points

Extremely good value,
Loads of USB ports including 4 USB 2.0,
Very compatible,
Good manual.

Bad Points

Unstable when overclocking FSB to extreme levels.
BIOS screens flicker disconcertingly but seem to work OK.

General Comments

This Gigabyte GA-7VRX is the perfect mainboard for gamers who already have a good sound card, NIC etc and just want good value for money. As long as you're not an extreme overclocker, this board is fast, stable and compatible (mine is revision 2.0. Apparently ver 1.0 didn't like GF4 MXs). There is no fan on the north bridge which may be why the FSB doesn't overclock too well but of course not having another fan also means less noise. (I hate noisy PCs)

Good review, however I have revision 2.0 as well, and ram seems to heat up very fast, resluting in lockups, etc. Most of the default bios settings have to be changed for any performance value, ie: Set ram to top performance instead of normal, etc. Otherwise, your expectations go down the toilet since you don't realize you need to do some manual tweaking first. The user manual did not help me much, other than to identify parts on the system board, it's descriptions left much to be desired.

Well NO KIDDING "mr do"... it would be irresponsible for a mainboard manufacturer to pre-set all the fastest settings then have 70% of the owners left with an instable board, instead of letter everyone take their own risks to increase performance.

Gigabyte does it again... a stable but ho-hum board that doesn't break any new ground... in a way that's GOOD, if you just want a dependable, stable board at reasonable price-point.
