General Comments

I went through 4 different mobile phones and 3 different plans in the past 10 days before i chose the LG VX3100. I was looking for a light-weight, compact phone with a relatively long battery life and good reception. I wanted basic service, and I tried to avoid the frills. The black and white display eats up less power than color phones; the Verizon network, though not crisp, will make it possible to talk; the '3100 is in the ultra-small and lightweight category. This is my initial take, I've had it only for one day so far, but this also means that my experience with other phones is still fresh in my mind. Audiovox '8900 had too many frills and was a lot more expensive. The LG VX4011(AT&T) was a better deal, but I didn't get reception in my apartment (if you can, I'd say get this one instead). The Samsung A310 is bulkier; its features come at the cost of greater volume, buttons with a flimsy feel, and a heating problem that is noticeable every time I talk on it.
