Good Points

Good solid construction, works with all but the digital canon slr's. many features and a constant flash coverage. excellent battery life, especially with NiMH batteries.

Bad Points

can be top-heavy, when moving or running. works only on manual with canon digital cameras.

General Comments

This Canon 430-EZ flash gun now is quite old in the canon line up, having replaced the 420ez, and now the 430ez has been replaced by the 540ez as the top flash for the non digital cameras.
although old, it still has many features that most people will not use. such as strobe, etc.

old type flashes just flashed and the lens took the light in and the sensor on the flash cut the flash off when it thought it had enough.

this and other canons try and light the object of the flash and its surroundings, so that the photo looks like it has been taken in daylight.

the light enters the lens, reads the film's iso in the camera and tells the flash what amount of flash to use. this can be 1/4 or 1/64 of the flash power.

i have photographed weddings using flash all the time and taken up to 14 rolls of film using only one set of batteries. this is because the flash will only give you a type of fill-in flash rather than one big zap.

when you put the flash on your camera, in my case canon 1n's and put the mode to programme the camera will give a low shutter speed 1/60 and f-8 or f-11 for a high dept of field. i use my camera for sports and the slow shutter speed gives the subject time to move slightly thus causing slight ghosting making the photo worthless.

i tried turning the camera onto manual and using 800 iso fuji film set the camera to 1/125 at f-5.6. this gives me a great photo all the time for inside sports' stadiums. the flash will give you on the display the distance of the flash coverage and will blink the ready lite if you are too far away.

the high manual shutter speed stops all action and the low depth of field makes the subject stand out.

for 400iso use 1/90 at f5-6 200 iso 1/60 at 5.6 etc.
