Good Points

It was free, admittedly.

Bad Points

clumsy, poorly written software needs expensive "upgrade" ripoff before you can use it. BEWARE!!

General Comments

I aquired this Sonic Basic MyDVD software when I bought my new DELL pc tower. As I am interested in burning video and still onto CD, I did try to use the software. Everything you want to do requires you to "upgrade". In fact the pre- installed software allows you to do virtually nothing. You need to order the "Deluxe" version before you can do anything. This upgrade came from Germany and cost over £40. To install the upgrade takes less than 15 seconds so that shows how far your money has gone. AND I still need to buy an "analogue video capture card". As all these cards come with their own software- including MyDVD deluxe in one case- you are left wondering why you were stupid enough to buy the upgrade in the first place. Delete this program, it's just a cheap ripoff.

My copy of "My DVD version 4.5.2" came on the CD disk with "Sony Screenblast Movie Studio" and for me, they were both a waste of money. The Movie studio section was the editing section, and might have some good features, but I don't know. It was very complicated and hard to use. When I tried to get customer service they said they don't provide customer assistance except for the upper level programs. "Would you like to buy an upgrade?" Once I finally pieced together a basic movie just to try it the real fun began. There's no way to insert chapter points except during capture by hitting the space bar at the point you want it. But how do you know until you do the editing in the first place. The only way is to render only one section at a time and that becomes a chapter which must be saved on the hard drive. When your done you pull all these sections together to make a movie. VERY time consuming and difficult. Another problem is that it was finicky about reading AVI files, and doesn't read WMV files from windows movie maker program. Don't get it. In fact, I don't trust the Sony name. Upgrade that!
