The battery life is a problem, but better than my brother's Polaroid. I've bought NiMH rechargables (four batteries and charger about $20) and that's definitely a cheaper way to go. Not only do the batteries last two to three times longer on each charge, but they can be recharged 500 to 1,000 times. I plan to buy a "universal" USB Compact Flash connection and that will also save batteries (and speed up downloads). But, if you can only get one -- get the batteries and charger, you'll save money almost immediately.
