Artistic/Creative/Musical Maturity, blend of influences and styles, vocally stretching herself more, more r&b feel and less tacky and unprofessional "computerised" sound, as of her last album where she was just starting out.
In a way, less soulful because there is a lack of intimacy in this album which was present in songs such as "Caged Bird" in "Songs in A Minor". Slight repetition in song themes and arrangments. Limitation in range. Less colourful and personal than her debut.
In her sophomore effort, Alicia Keys has definitely shown she has matured from her debut. She combines various music influences and accelerates her song-writing skills, at the same time stretching her vocal abilities to give her heart and soul into "The Diary Of". However, oddly enough I felt a lack of intimacy in this album, with not too many slow, dimmed down, reflective songs..more colourful and overproduced efforts clutter the crowd. All in all however, this is an impressive effort, especially considering the phenomenal success of "Songs In A Minor".
