Age of Empires is the excellent strategy series from Microsoft. The Age of Kings is by far the best in the series, even perhaps the best in the gerne. The basics are, you build up an empire in the middle ages where you manage your resources (Food, Wood, Stone & Gold), build up your army (Knights, Infantry, Ships, Siege Weapons etc.) and conquer or befriend allies and enemies.
In this game you can choose from 13 civilizatioms (ranging from British to Goths to Japanese) and build up your empire. The game offers lots of features including Online play (tried it a few years ago, pretty good), Random games, Map Editors, Campaigns (be Joan of Arc, William Wallace etc.) and Regicide games (kill the king).
This game excels in all areas even though its been out for years (came out in 2000). It is also really fairly priced at £15 at Amazon. There is only one flaw in the game - you cannot have more than 200 ubits, but this is only minor - im still playing this game after 4 years!
