Abs.'s review of United Airlines

United Airlines although providing a steady supply of...”

★★★☆☆

written by Abs. on 10/08/2002

Good Points
MEL to LAX 1/12 - 2/12 2001 - Fast service. Nice food that caters for all. Constant supply of service. Always helpful.

Bad Points
Delays at the airport, first at their terminal before take off and then at LAX when only 2 customs officers were on duty. At our stop over in New Zealand, we were asked to board but upon boarding we were told that there would be a slight delay due to mechanical problems. 1 hour later, we were still sitting on the tarmac when another voice over informed us of a hole in the plane that would require emergency attention. It took over 2 hours to repair the plane and all this time we were never given any refreshments. We weren't asked to disembark the plane but made to sit inside the hot and humid plane. To add to our sorrows the line for the toilets was extremely long.

General Comments
United Airlines although providing a steady supply of service are a hostile airlines that make a exhausting 17hr journey into a 25hr ordeal. The seats were extremely uncomfortable in the first leg of the flight, to add to our discomfort we were made to stretch our necks in awkward positions to watch the movies being screened. The hostesses although constantly patrolling the aisles were always rude. Furthermore, we sat on the tarmac for 3hrs in NZ just before a 14hr flight to Los Angeles. The flight was riddled with annoyances such as the lights being turned on in the middle of the night. Once of the flight the customs officers at LAX were extremely slow and once at the head of the line they seemed to patronise my family, one officer pointing to the automatic doors saying "please make your way to the magic doors."

After our 15 day holiday in Los Angeles we were 'lucky' enough to revisit LAX airport. Not only was boarding a confused happening but the PA wasn't working properly so all messages sounded like a gurgle. Boarding was a nightmare and once on board we were lucky enough to enjoy the hospitality of UA once more.

modern air travel is challenging and at times is nothing short of an adventure. I respect airlines that take the time to find and properly repair potential safety problems that you described, which are bound to pop-up- it isn't always so with some of the "low fare" airlines that some say defer maintenance. hostile is not an appropriate description- airlines do suffer from overworked, overtired & underpaid staff- the quality of your experience can suffer, especially if youre so highly sensitive to minor annoyances. if you're looking for perfection, than you may need to fly first class or hire your own jet, but that won't help you get through customs- thats a government function that tends to be slow in the US major cities, where the agents typically are short staff & ill-compensated. Sit back & roll with things a bit more- transporting you & your 50 lbs. of luggage from the UK to Melbourne & back mostly efficiently for less than $1k is truly a bargain, if you think about it. try driving or boating instead..

Sorry I completely disagree with the resopnse. United is not the cheapest airline and most airlines in the same price zone provide a superior service. Have you flown Continental or transatlantic on Virgin recently? They charge about the same for most comparable routes and are, in my opinion, far superior... I flew United once, and would be a fool to make that mistake again.

I used to work for United Airlines based at Heathrow, i used to work on check-in and i am so pleased that i don't work for that company any more!!!
<br>
I worked for them for 4 years, and it felt like a prison camp! They need to get in new aircrafts, the cabin crw are so old, the eldest is 70 years old which i think is disgusting and God forbid if anything happened i would not want her to help me out in a emergency! No wonder United is going down the pan with the way they treat their staff and customers, i am happy to say that i don't work for them any more and now work for a much better airline!!!
