Spacy inside-compact outside, very practical in town, clutchless gearbox, expected high residual prices
Price, poor performance, Mercedes servicing & parts costs
INTERIOR:
The first thing that catches your attention is the clever design of the Mercedes Benz A140 A-class.
The interior space is very good compared to the exterior dimensions. Buttons and switches are well positioned and the materials used seems to be of good quality.
There are adequate storage compartments and the flexibility offered by the folding/removable rear seats is very welcome.
RIDE & HANDLING:
The car offers a relaxing & comfortable ride. The handling is predictable and safe. The electronics (ESP/ASR) make the car virtually idiot-proof.
PERFORMANCE:
The 1.4 litre engine is the least powerfull of the range and this is evident after a few minutes of driving the car on an open road.
The A-class is intended mostly for town use so it would be only fair to say that the performance is adequate for that task. The 1.6 litre engine would be recommended and so would the semi-automatic clutchless 'box.
SUM-UP:
The A-class is a clever design, quality product that sets new standards to the town (mini saloon) car category but at a (rather high)price.
