Freeky.'s Review of LG DVD 5083

Overall Rating

Good Points

Plays DVD & MP3 CDR/RW, composite or RGB (scart) output.

Bad Points

Won't play VCD or SVCD, no S-Video output, no optical output.

General Comments

This LG DVD5083 DVD player (£129.99 from Tesco) is overpriced for its spec, it has many less features than players costing £85.

Picture quality is OK, but setup is not very clear and there are not many options!

If the price comes right down & you don`t care about full compatibility then consider it, maybe!

The price of this DVD has gone down. The dvd can play region free once firmware upgrade is applied and also it can be remote hack to enable VCD (see below).

    VCD Enable:

    1. Power on the player with no disc in the drive.
    2. Press Pause on the remote control.
    3. Using the remote control, key in the following: 1, 4, 7, 2 (the
characters 01 47 should appear on the display) [If your player is a non UK
model, this number will probably be different - don't worry]
    4. Press the UP arrow three times (the characters 04 Fd should appear on the
    display)
[This number may be different depending on the configuration of your
    specific model - don't worry]
    5. Press Program, 6, Program, 5 (the characters 04 FE should now be
    displayed).
    6. Press Enter (the display should flash briefly).
    7. Press Return.
    8. Power the player off and then back on.
    9. Play a VCD!

It is correct that you can enable the vcd compability in all LG dvd-players, but think twice before doing it since your warranty is no longer existing. (excuse my bad english)

Hey dudes, i have this player, and i was wondering, can i "hack" my player to see NTSC REG 0 discs?? I'd really want to watch em. If you can help, i'd be very very grateful! Thanks.

The VCD hack works fine even on French player.
Is there the same kind of trick for multizone enabling?

    Then for SVCD do:

1 - Power up the dvd with no disc
2 - Press Pause and then press 1,4,7,2
    3 - Press up arrow 6 times, the characters 07 00
should appear on the display, may be different for
    your model
    4 - Press Program 6, Program 5.
    5 - Press Enter
6- Power off and power on the player

Is there a code to "unhack" the Vcd so I can get my warranty back? I have the LG-5952N and I didn't enable the Vcd yet because of the warranty problem. Sorry for my bad english! :)

Hi there!I just wanna say that i tried out the VCD hack and it works perfect.
I would like to know how can I do to see in my lg 5083 dvd-r or dvd+r. This player just plays mp3 with 128 kb/s. If there are mp3 with 160 kb/s it does not play.
I would apreciate some kind of help.
Sorry for my bad English, but I`m Portuguese. Thanks anyway.

How can I make this dvd player "region free" preferably by using the remote. If the firmware needs to be updated using a cd where can I get hold of the cd and how do I go about applying it.
    Thanks.
